Manchester United need a midfielder During Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Southampton on Sunday, the club’s lack of options in central midfield was made apparent. Scott McTominay was only fit enough for a place amongst the substitutes, leaving Nemanja Matic to start the encounter.
By the end, it was clear that the Red Devils were lacking in the middle of the park.

Despite such woes, however, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested that United’s business may be done for the summer, saying:
“I don’t think much is going to happen. If something happens, it is a bonus. You never know what happens in the world of football. But we’ve had a very good window. I am happy with what we’ve done”.
McTominay to have surgery This stance may change in the dying days of the transfer window, however, on the back of the news that Scott McTominay has been sidelined with a groin injury, that will require surgery.
McTominay has groin surgery after coming on at Southampton – where Solskjaer said he was carrying an injury pre-match. McTominay got injured early vs Newcastle on Boxing Day 2019, played on until HT, left ground on crutches and was out for two months #mufc https://t.co/bBIb9Z4Fp7

In an official statement on the club’s website, United revealed that:
“Scott has undergone surgery for an ongoing groin injury that was causing significant pain when playing,”
“Having tried all other treatment options in pre-season, surgery was deemed necessary to resolve the issue.
“We hope to have him back soon.”
This leaves Solskjaer with just Fred, Matic and Donny van de Beek as options in the middle of the pitch, to join star duo Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes. With Matic ageing, and van de Beek clearly not favoured by the manager, could Manchester United be persuaded to dive back into the market to bolster their position of need?
