Manchester United have already missed out on silverware this season, with former United legend Robin van Persie to blame.

Manchester United‘s U19s have been playing in a tournament in Croatia, in which they found themselves in the final today against Robin van Persie‘s Feyenoord.

The academy side fought ridiculously hard to appear in Sunday’s final. The young devils had to take on three matches in three days – really testing the fitness of the young lads.

The group stages ended with an absolute thriller. United defeated Dinamo Zagreb 5-4 in a remarkable affair, coming from 4-2 down, which meant they secured three points and topped the group to qualify for Sunday’s final.

Manchester United U19s lose in the final

The final took place today at 10:30 AM today, but it was van Persie’s very talented Feyenoord side that won the battle and brought home some silverware.

The Dutch side picked apart United from start to finish. The final score was eventually 3-0, with all goals coming in the second half.

United were lucky to be in it for that long, with the goalkeeper Elyh Harrison having a phenomenal first half, making some very impressive saves (particularly the one below) to keep the score level pegging.

MORE UNITED STORIES

But under the watchful eye of master goal-scorer van Persie, his team showed their finishing capabilities with what were three very well-worked goals.

The young Reds shouldn’t be too disheartened, for an U19s tournament, United had many 18 and 17-year-olds, who all certainly didn’t look out of their depth against some more physically developed sides.

As always at United, it’s great to see the young lads thriving. It’s ingrained in the United DNA to trust in youth, so hopefully a few of the names we saw shining in Croatia could be sniffing around the first team in a few more years’ time.
