Manchester United Women are on the verge of appointing Brighton & Hove Albion’s Polly Bancroft as their first head of football, while Telegraph Sport also understands they are will soon unveil the signing of England forward Nikita Parris from Arsenal. Bancroft currently serves as general manager at Brighton and has extensive experience at both the Football Association and Uefa, where she previously worked as a business development specialist. Her arrival will be a hugely significant one for Manchester United from a structural and organisational point of view. Since reforming their senior women’s team in 2018, until now the Women’s Super League side have been operating without such a role specifically dedicated to the women’s team But the move will allow John Murtough, United’s director of football, to further focus his attention on recruitment and the core duties expected from him across the club, aided also by the appointment of Andy O’Boyle as deputy director of football at the end of May. The club, whose women’s side have finished fourth in the WSL three seasons running, began their interview process to find a head of women’s football shortly after Christmas. It is understood Bancroft will take up her role after completing a formal contractual notice period with the Sussex club. Parris, 28, was part of the England squad that won the European Championship at Wembley on Sunday, where she came on as an extra-time substitute in the 2-1 victory over Germany. She has been strongly linked with the move and Telegraph Sport understands the former Champions League winner with French club Lyon will be unveiled by Manchester United this week. The 2019 Football Writers Association’s Player of the Year award winner, who was a WSL title winner with Manchester City in 2016, began her career with Everton and has scored 15 times in 67 senior international caps for England.
