Manchester United transfer news RECAP

Manchester United are progressing with a potential loan move for Burnley striker Wout Weghorst, who is currently on loan with Turkish side Besiktas.

The Reds are looking to recruit a new striker this month following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in November, with Erik ten Hag keen to add cover for Anthony Martial. The Frenchman has been impressive this term and registered seven goal contributions, but he has already missed 15 matches through injury.

The Manchester Evening News understands that United are keen on a move for Netherlands forward Weghorst. The 30-year-old has scored eight goals in 16 games for his loan club this term and is aligned with Ten Hag’s transfer strategy of favouring players familiar to him or schooled in his homeland.

Meanwhile, reports are suggesting that Atletico Madrid are demanding a £9.5million loan fee and a commitment to buy at £70.5m for Joao Felix in January. The Portugal international has fallen out with manager Diego Simeone and the club are happy for him to leave this month. The Reds are thought to be keen on the player, but are unlikely to pay a substantial loan fee for any attacker.

TODAY’S BIG TALKING POINT: Would Weghorst be a good signing? Have your say here .

Mohammed Kudus ‘would love move’ to Old Trafford

Mohammed Kudus “would love” the chance to move to United, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Ajax ace has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, with the midfielder having impressed for Ghana at the World Cup in Qatar.

As per Give Me Sport, O’Rourke said: “Yeah, I think a club like Manchester United comes calling for you, you’re going to have to be interested in it. I’m sure Kudus would love that opportunity to join one of the world’s biggest clubs, he wants to play on the biggest stage possible.

“He showed he can rise to the occasion as he has done for Ajax in the Champions League this season as well as Ghana at the World Cup when he was arguably their best player.”

David De Gea is now outright 10th on United’s all-time appearances list, having moved ahead of Joe Spence on 511 matches with his start in the FA Cup win over Everton.

The Spaniard joins an illustrious group of Reds legends – but his teammate Bruno Fernandes was still keen to have a joke with the shot-stopper.

Gary Neville slams ‘strange’ new ‘Ronaldo rule’ with Casemiro point

Recent reports have hinted that United are planning to introduce a so-called ‘Ronaldo rule’ in a bid to stop any members of the squad becoming jealous of their teammates’ wages.

The rule would see all salaries limited at £200k per week, regardless of seniority.

And it is safe to say that the news did not go down well with Neville.

Besiktas director issues Weghorst update amid United interest

Besiktas sporting director Ceyhun Kazanci has issued an update on striker Wout Weghorst’s future amid United’s interest in signing him on loan.

United are progressing with a deal to sign the Dutchman on loan for the remainder of the season from Burnley. Weghorst joined Besiktas on loan from Burnley during the summer, following the Clarets’ relegation to the Championship.

Kazanci, as quoted by Fanatik, said:

“I don’t understand why Weghorst said goodbye to the fans, why he made such a move. He is our football player right now. Our contract expires at the end of the season. If Manchester United or any other team wants Weghorst, they will meet with Burnley anyway.

“Burnley will then contact us and discuss the terms of separation. If we accept, the contract will be terminated. Otherwise, it will go on until the end of the season. He can’t just go. There will have to be a reward for us to approve the separation. I’ll give an example. Burnley told us, ‘We made a deal with this team for Weghorst. We give you half of the transfer fee’. This may be a different condition. Then we’ll sit down and talk.”

Ten Hag slams ‘average’ past transfers made by United

Erik ten Hag has described United’s transfer business in recent years before his appointment as “average”.

The Reds recruited well in the summer, signing Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro and Antony. With the club having already spent £225million in the summer, Ten Hag is desperate to avoid the mistakes he witnessed the club making before his arrival.

He told Dutch outlet Voetbal International (via 90min):

“Manchester United didn’t exactly have the fear factor last season. There was no spirit. I saw no team dynamic in the squad. The mental resilience was very low. I saw that as an outsider – and also noticed it in my first weeks at the club. I looked at the culture of the club. I asked: ‘How did Manchester United become great?’ The club has bought an unimaginable number of players in recent years who have not been good enough. Most purchases have been average – and at United average is not good enough. United’s shirt weighs heavily. Only real personalities, who can perform under great pressure, can play here.”
