Manchester United transfer news RECAP

Manchester United fans will have suffered with mixed emotions on Sunday as they saw joy and despair for two of their players in Lusail.

Argentina beat France on penalties to secure their first World Cup since 1986. While Lisandro Martinez was once again on the bench for the South Americans, he was involved in the celebrations as his teammates hailed their joint accomplishment.

Raphael Varane meanwhile did feature for France and played exceptionally in what was an end-to-end encounter between the two football giants. United’s 29-year-old would suffer an injury scare during extra time as he was pictured by cameras hobbling towards the dugout after being substituted.

Erik ten Hag will be hopeful that any injury to Varane is not too serious. Elsewhere, MEN Sport reported over the weekend that United would not rule out a second move for Frenkie de Jong and Jude Bellingham.

While the interest in Bellingham is not surprising considering his potential, there is puzzlement over still wanting De Jong. United battled with Barcelona for much of the summer transfer window over a deal for their midfielder however the Catalan club would not budge.

It is understood that during the summer, De Jong was giving Ten Hag private reassurances that he wanted to move to Old Trafford. But, this transfer never materialised and Casemiro was signed instead.

TODAY’S BIG TALKING POINT: Are United right to be targeting De Jong again? Have your say here.

Take a look back at the news, views and transfer rumours from our dedicated updates below.

Mikael Silvestre praises Dalot

Former United man Silvestre believes that Portuguese full-back Dalot has made the position his own at Old Trafford.

Silvestre told Bettingexpert:

Diogo has been improving in his defending but from the time he joined United I thought that was the weaker side of his game. Offensively he’s very good, which is the case for most modern full backs. Trent Alexander-Arnold is also in that build in terms of being extremely important offensively but the downside is positioning and 1v1 situations. He was given a chance and has done really well at United as he didn’t have much game time at the start of his United career. He’s made that position his.

France legend criticises Rashford and Maguire

Former Arsenal and Chelsea man William Gallas has claimed that Rashford and Maguire are not good enough to play for United.

Speaking to Genting Casino, Gallas said:

Manchester United is too big a club for Maguire, that is why he has not performed there. I’m not sure if Tottenham will want him at the back. They need defenders but Maguire would not be good for them. He is almost 30 years old and he does not have as much speed as others. The older Maguire gets, the less speed he will have. Tottenham should invest in players who are younger and who are the future. They should try to sign Gvardiol over Maguire. Rashford to PSG will not happen. Marcus has not been good enough since the beginning of the season and has not shown how good he was when he first started playing for Man United. He was unbelievable, however now it is completely different. PSG already have players in that position so they do not need Rashford.

OPINION – Lautaro Martinez could have ruined his chances of United transfer

Manchester United need a new striker after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Many names are of interest including World Cup stars Cody Gakpo and Goncalo Ramos, but one name that has been touted in the past is Inter’s Lautaro Martinez. The Argentinian striker was part of the Italian side’s’ Serie A winning campaign and has been lauded for his hold-up play and ability to link up with other attackers.

However after his performances at the World Cup, the links to United may finally end.

‘Opposite of Messi’ – Cristiano Ronaldo labelled as ‘flop’ of the World Cup

Ronaldo opened the scoring for Portugal during their World Cup campaign with a penalty against Ghana in a 3-2 win over the Black Stars.

Yet that was the only occasion that the 37-year-old found the back of the net during his time in Qatar, with Morocco eventually putting a stop to Portugal’s campaign in the quarter-finals.

And now the former United man has been slammed by a former World Cup winner as one of the worst players at the tournament.

Diogo Dalot has made the right-back position his own

Former United defender Mikael Silvestre has heaped praise on Dalot, claiming that the Portugal international has made the full-back position his own at Old Trafford.

“Diogo has been improving in his defending but from the time he joined United I thought that was the weaker side of his game,” Silvestre told bettingexpert. “Offensively he’s very good, which is the case for most modern full backs.”

United open the Red Cafe to those in need

A classy move from a classy club has seen United open the doors of Old Trafford to the local community during December.

The club’s winter campaign, ‘United by Your Side’, will see the Red Cafe provide those in need with a space to stay warm, chat, have a hot drink and some snacks.

“People can arrive and register via the North Stand reception and will be guided to the Red Cafe,” a club statement read.

“In addition to the warm space the club are introducing ‘talking benches’ on the forecourt at Old Trafford – signposted as a welcoming place for people who may feel lonely or worried to sit and talk to others.”

Former United striker Louis Saha sends warning to French stars amid Man United links

“Marcus Thuram and Randal Kolo Muani made a brilliant contribution to the game [against Argentina] in very difficult circumstances,” Saha told Paddy Power.

“They maintained their composure in crucial moments, and they are great players.

“At this moment in time, young players moving to Manchester United need to be cautious because we have seen some really good players struggle at United. I’m not saying they shouldn’t join because of that, but it’s a difficult time.

“It’s not enough to just be a good player or in good form. It’s all about how they can adapt, and the situation is not totally clear at the moment, so I don’t want to throw any names around.

“They [Thuram and Kolo Muani] are very good prospects and I hope they can see that Manchester United are growing, and Erik ten Hag is the right manager.”

Herrera on Mourinho’s infamous 2017 celebration

Ander Herrera has discussed Jose Mourinho’s ‘three fingers’ celebration following United’s Europa League triumph in 2017.

Following the Reds’ 2-0 victory over Ajax at the Friends Arena in Stockholm, the Portuguese coach held three fingers in the air – and the reason why he did that was widely debated.

However, Herrera has revealed that he had forgotten the club had won three trophies that season. Speaking on the club’s in-house podcast, the Spaniard said:

“Yeah, because we won that title and I didn’t realise that was the third of the season, because the first one was too far away from that moment. But it is not easy. If you see at the end of the season, not too many clubs win three titles in one season. It was important overall because we were bringing a European trophy back, against Ajax, which is an important club in Europe, we qualify for the Champions League as well, we were going to play the European Super Cup as well. It was an important trophy and I think it was the last of the club as well. This year, I think it will be the year. They have to beat Barcelona in the next tie. I like the team, I like the coach.”

United get Raphael Varane injury boost

United defender Raphael Varane was only fatigued when he was substituted in the late stages of France’s World Cup final defeat to Argentina – the MEN understands.

The 29-year-old collapsed to the turf in extra-time, with Argentina going on to defeat France 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the game finished 3-3.

Varane, who overcame illness to start for France on Sunday, is scheduled to have this week off before returning to Carrington next week.

United still keen on Costa – reports

Reports from A Bola indicate that United maintain interest in FC Porto and Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa even after he put pen-to-paper on a new contract there. Costa, 23, has been mooted as a possible replacement for David de Gea from next season.

Costa signed extended terms last month to stave off Barcelona and Chelsea.

It’s thought he now has a release clause around the £64million mark.

OPINION – United interest in De Jong and Bellingham is statement of intent

For a player who never goes into hiding on the pitch, Jude Bellingham did his best to hide from cameras when he was driven into Manchester United’s Carrington training complex nearly three years ago. Bellingham’s father smiled for the cameraman.

Sources at Carrington say United “rolled out the red carpet” for Bellingham, 16 at the time. Ed Woodward, who had indicated earlier in the season he had “nothing to do with recruitment”, and transfer negotiator Matt Judge were both on site. Bellingham was introduced to all key staff personnel.

Arjen Robben and Aaron Ramsey are maybe the only other worldwide-known footballers who have left Carrington only to never return. Robben was papped and United were emboldened enough to write ‘Ramsey fee agreed’ on their own website.
