Manchester United suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday as they fell 1-0 to Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
Kortney Hause scored a late header for the visitors to give them the lead in the 88th minute, before conceding a penalty for handling Edinson Cavani’s header.
Bruno Fernandes picked up the ball and placed it on the spot, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, and blasted the ball way over the bar as United were beaten for the third time in four games and for the second consecutive home game in all competitions.
Fernandes took to social media to apologise long after the final whistle with a long statement but United must put it behind them ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie against Villarreal.
In transfer news, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly keen on signing 23-year-old RB Leipzig defender Nordi Mukiele.
The French international’s contract is due to expire at the end of next season so United could potentially attract him on a cut-price deal next summer to compete for a spot at right-back with Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

United are ‘waiting’ on Pogba contract decisionFabrizio Romano has given an update on Paul Pogba’s contract situation. The Frenchman’s current deal at the club expires at the end of the season, which means he could soon leave for free.
“Manchester United are waiting for the final choice of Paul Pogba,” Romano told Benchwarmers.
“The new contract has already been offered for months, Paul must make a personal decision and not just an economic one together with his agent Mino Raiola; sign a further long contract with Man United or try a different experience?
“Pogba has been loving the atmosphere created in the club in recent months but has not yet given an answer. The club will insist and hope to be able to extend the agreement soon.
“Of course, optimism is much more on the Bruno Fernandes front. Talks with his agent began in the first week of July and Manchester United know that renewing his contract is essential: Bruno is more than just a leader, on and off the pitch.
“That’s why the club is negotiating a new long-term deal to reward him, knowing that the Portuguese is very happy at Old Trafford.”

Solskjaer pinpoints United weakness in Aston Villa defeatOle Gunnar Solskjaer blamed Manchester United’s lack of quality in the final third and their lack of control for their defeat to Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
United racked up 28 shots against Villa but didn’t work Emiliano Martinez often enough and were punished for their profligacy when Kortney Hause headed in an 88th-minute winner.
There was still time for Bruno Fernandes to blaze an injury-time penalty over the crossbar which summed up United’s frustrating day as they dropped more points in the title race.
United threatened on the break in what was an end-to-end game where Villa created plenty of chances of their own, but Solskjaer pinpointed the shortcomings in the final third as being decisive.
