The 31-year-old has become a mainstay at the club since Sir Alex Ferguson recruited him nearly a decade ago. It was not easy replacing Edwin van der Sar, but the Spaniard has done a stellar job under several managers.

De Gea was incredible under Louis van Gaal and notched his performances up a level under Jose Mourinho. The shot-stopper was a huge reason behind the Red Devils finishing 2nd in 2017 and winning the UEFA Europa League.

David de Gea is set to be handed a new contract by Manchester United amidst his recent upturn in form. (GETTY Images) His abilities in goal tapered off slightly last season after some tame performances against big clubs. Additionally, his blunders also cost him a spot at this year’s European Championship with Spain. Moreover, Dean Henderson has been breathing down his neck for a first-team spot for the last two seasons.

However, the Englishman suffered Covid-19 during the start of the season and returned later than expected. De Gea assumed the starting spot and took full advantage of it. His incredible saves earned the club crucial points against Wolves, West Ham, Villarreal, Southampton, and Atalanta.

De Gea is set to be rewarded for his encouraging performances. His current contract shall end in 2023, and the Old Trafford outfit will enter into new talks with the goalkeeper.
