Manchester United have one of the most complete squads in world football following the additions that they have made to their team this summer. But if there is one area that they might be a bit short of options in, it is in the middle of the park.

Before the club ended up signing Cristiano Ronaldo, the feeling was that it was a defensive midfielder that they needed to bring in this summer. Nemanja Matic is the most natural in that role in the current squad and at 33 years of age, he would not be expected to play every game.

As a result, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to rotate with the options that he already has in his squad when it comes to picking his midfield. One player who featured heavily last season is Scott McTominay. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he made 49 appearances for the club across all competitions last season, scoring 7 goals and providing 2 assists.

Thus, the midfielder having to undergo surgery recently must have been a worry for the Red Devils. But it looks like he could be set to return to action in the near future. McTominay posted on his Instagram a picture of himself with the caption an emoji reading ‘soon’:

McTominay returning would be a huge boost for Manchester UnitedRumours early in pre-season had suggested that Solskjaer could go for a change in system this season and field only one defensive midfielder.

But till now, the manager has stuck with his old system of playing with a duo in the middle of the park, sitting in front of the defence. McTominay and Fred played quite a lot in that area together last season and it will be interesting to see if they do the same this time around as well.

McTominay can be very important in that role as he showed last season that he has added goals to his game as well, which is a massive positive. For now though, the most important thing for him is to recover and return to full fitness. We would like to wish him the best of luck in that journey.
