Palace confirm signing of midfielder Hughes from WatfordCrystal Palace have completed the signing of Will Hughes in a deal worth in the region of £6 million.

The deal with Watford for the former England under-21 international could rise closer to £10 million with potential add-ons.

Hughes has now become Palace’s sixth summer signing – joining Marc Guehi, Joachim Andersen, Michael Olise and Remi Matthews, who all joined on permanent deals, while Conor Gallagher was loaned in from Chelsea.

Patrick Vieira’s side have failed to score in any of their three games in all competitions this season – but there have been signs of progress, says The Athletic’s Crystal Palace writer Matt Woosnam.

Van Gaal: Van de Beek needs to playLouis van Gaal says Donny Van de Beek needs more game time at Manchester United after he was left out of the Netherlands squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers.

The midfielder was on the bench for United’s opening two Premier League games this season and was ruled out of the European Championships earlier this summer with injury.

Van de Beek has struggled to make an impact since signing from Ajax for £40m in August 2020, and made just four Premier League starts last season.

Van Gaal said: “I told him that he needs to start playing games. I spoke with Van de Beek last night for 45 minutes, but I am not going to tell you anything.

“This is between Donny and me. I am capable of advising players.”

The club-record signing has not featured in any of Spurs’ four matches this season – and failed to make an appearance in pre-season either.

Ndombele has been looking to leave the club this summer, but the Spurs boss said despite training, the former Lyon man is not being considered for selection.

“We speak yesterday and we speak the day before, Tanguy is with us.

“He’s not been an option. Nothing has changed really.”

‘We wrote a pretty beautiful story together’ – Ronaldo on Juventus spellCristiano Ronaldo has posted a goodbye message to Juventus on Instagram after sensationally re-signing for Manchester United.

“Today I depart from an amazing club, the biggest in Italy and surely one of the biggest in all of Europe. I gave my heart and soul for Juventus and I’ll always love the city of Turin until my final days.

“The “tifosi bianconeri” always respected me and I tried to thank that respect by fighting for them in every game, every season, every competition. In the end, we can all look back and realize that we achieved great things, not all that we wanted, but still, we wrote a pretty beautiful story together.

“I will always be one of you. You are now part of my history, as I feel that I’m part of yours. Italy, Juve, Turin, tifosi bianconeri, you’ll always be in my heart.”

Ronaldo’s back! What do you think, Manchester United fans?

August 27, 2021 at 12:35 PM EDT

Manchester United sign Cristiano Ronaldo – ‘He did things to defenders that made you squirm with glee’The most topsy-turvy transfer window ever just took its latest twist.

Cristiano Ronaldo has re-signed for Manchester United, twelve years after leaving Old Trafford for Real Madrid in one of the most sensational returns football has ever seen.

The Athletic’s Jack Lang wrote about Ronaldo’s first spell at Old Trafford as part of The Premier League 60 series.

“The insatiable hunger for self-mastery that eventually propelled him into the stratosphere first took root in Manchester. From around 2006 until his departure for Real Madrid, we had the full bildungsroman: no baggage, no background noise — just a young man in a luminous state of pure becoming.

“Ronaldo did not reach his towering zenith in the Premier League. But we got him when he was at his most frivolous, his most fallible and his most fun.

“And then we got to watch him sand down the raw edges of his game, one by one, until he was on the cusp of greatness.”

Klopp: ‘No battle’ between Robertson and TsimikasLiverpool boss Jurgen Klopp claims there is “no battle” for the left-back slot at the club as he ponders a recall for Andy Robertson over Kostas Tsimikas.

The Scotland captain missed his side’s opening two Premier League games with ankle ligament damage sustained in pre-season, but declared he was “ready to play” after signing a new five-year contract at the club this week, with Tsimikas impressing in his absence.

“There is no battle, players don’t battle each other, it’s about who is in good shape. I’m really happy how Kostas performed after a tough first year.

“We have two really good left-backs and it was always the idea to have that.”

Manchester United on verge of reaching agreement with Juventus to sign RonaldoManchester United are on the verge of reaching an agreement with Juventus to sign striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

It is understood the fee is €15 million, plus €8 million in add-ons.

Manchester City are no longer interested in the Portuguese star, leaving United in pole position to re-sign their former number 7.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left the door firmly open for a return to Old Trafford for Ronaldo in his press conference earlier on Friday: “He knows what we feel about him. If he was ever going to move away from Juventus, he knows we’re here.”

United reignite Trippier interest as Dortmund make loan bid for DalotBorussia Dortmund have made a loan bid for Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot. United are said to be considering the offer while at the same time reigniting talks over Kieran Trippier.

United’s pursuit of Trippier was paused earlier in the window due to Atletico Madrid’s demands for a £28 million fee together with Dalot’s good form in pre-season. But dialogue is open again after Dortmund’s approach, while AC Milan are also interested in signing the Portuguese full-back for a second time.

There still remain major hurdles to Dalot leaving and Trippier joining, with sources previously confident neither would happen.

Meanwhile, United are happy to let Amad Diallo leave on loan, but finding a suitable club this summer has proved complicated – you can read more on this story below.

Everton are ‘not considering’ selling Richarlison — Rafa BenitezRafa Benitez says Everton are “not considering” selling Richarlison despite speculation linking the Brazilian with a big-money move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Reports overnight suggested the 24-year-old was being lined up to replace Real Madrid target Kylian Mbappe, although sources close to the player have insisted that no talks have yet taken place between the two clubs.

But speaking ahead of Everton’s trip to Brighton on Saturday, Benitez insisted the striker was not for sale.

“We are not considering selling Richarlison,” Benitez said. “He is our player — we are really pleased with him and hopefully he can score a lot of goals this year for us.”

Juventus working on deal to sign Everton’s Moise KeanJuventus are working on a deal to re-sign Moise Kean from Everton, two years after selling the striker to the Premier League side for £25 million.

Kean has struggled to make an impact at Goodison Park since arriving in 2019 and spent last season on loan at Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 18 goals in 40 games across all competitions.

It is believed PSG explored recruiting Kean on a permanent basis before the acquisition of Lionel Messi earlier this summer and now Juventus are determined to bring the 21-year-old back to Turin.
