Manchester United are currently interested in Wolves star Ruben Neves. And Paul Parker thinks the midfielder is comparable to Paul Scholes, amid claims a deal for the Portugal international is ‘reasonably far down the line’. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have made a flying start to the summer transfer window and, now, the midfielder could be next.

It was Eurosport’s Dean Jones, speaking recently on The Football Terrace podcast, who said United had a deal for Neves ‘reasonably far down the line’.

He said: “I just haven’t heard a lot about Saul Niguez personally.

“So it’s hard for me to asses that one. So i’d say because of the information I’ve had, and it all depends on your sources, I know for a fact that they do like Neves, that they’ve been working on it in the background and it’s reasonably far down the line.

“And if they do want to progress with it they can, because the foundations have been laid.

“I don’t know about Saul Niguez, how much weight there really is behind that so it’s difficult for me to judge.

“When you talk about someone striking the ball, there’s only one player I can remember doing that, and that’s Paul Scholes.

“If he was playing for a Manchester United with the quality around him, you will see his game improve… players come to United and lift another level.

“Yes, more have struggled, but someone like Neves, coming to play with his countryman Fernandes, you’ll have someone who can play in deep areas and United have lacked that for a long time.

“It depends the path United want to take. Do they want a big name with a good marketing value or a big name who’s a big footballer?

“If it’s the latter, then Neves is a good player to go and get. And I think that’s the path they need to go down.”

United saw Scholes shine during his time at the club.

The 46-year-old won 11 Premier League titles, as well as three FA Cup crowns and the Champions League in 1999 and 2008.

And if United sign Neves, they’ll be hopeful he can propel them to similar prizes.

The Red Devils have struck gold with Portuguese players over the years, Bebe and Joel Pereira aside.

Cristiano Ronaldo joined as David Beckham’s replacement back in the summer transfer window of 2003, with the forward going on to be a huge Old Trafford hit.

Ronaldo fired the club to three league titles on the spin as well as the Champions League title before he was sold to Real Madrid for £80million in 2009.

Nani joined in 2008 and was also a success story, flourishing under Sir Alex Ferguson.

And United have seen Bruno Fernandes shine ever since his move from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, with the midfielder Solskjaer’s talisman.

Diogo Dalot hasn’t been an overwhelming hit – but the former Porto star still hasn’t been a flop either.

And whether Neves follows in their footsteps by rocking up at Old Trafford remains to be seen. At least, from United’s perspective, they’ve already got some of the negotiations out of the way.
