Manchester United have been told Mino Raiola is simply ‘trying to get one over on them’ as speculation over the future of Paul Pogba continues.
The 28-year-old midfielder is preparing to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford and ex United man Luke Chadwick has spoken about the situation between the club and Pogba’s agent.
He had been offered to extend that stay — with fresh terms reported to be worth £50million to the player — but so far Pogba and Raiola have opted to keep their options open.
United and the Italian ‘super agent’ have a fractious relationship to say the least with Raiola making a number of comments to cloud Pogba’s future during his time at the club.
United have not given up hope that the Frenchman will remain at Old Trafford beyond this season, despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
Having progressed through the club’s famed academy system, the World Cup winner spent four years at Juventus between 2012 and 2016 — returning to United for a staggering £89million fee.
Speaking about Pogba’s contract situation, former United midfielder Chadwick has warned the club about what Raiola may do this summer with Pogba.
He said: “Obviously, the club’s relationship with his agent has never been great and you just feel he’s trying to get one over United, taking him to the end of his contract and then moving him on to another club.
“It’s a tough one. He’s a really important player for United, a genuinely world class player.
“He’s the kind of player you need to win titles, so I’d like to see him stay for the season and, hopefully, United can win something and persuade him to stay and attract other new players to the club and help them move forward.”
Chadwick added: “At the end of the day, he’s in an incredible position, having played probably the best football of his United career going into the final year of his contract. I think the money United could get for him now wouldn’t be as good as last summer, if they’d moved him on then.
“Pogba wants to be winning titles. He won the World Cup with France — but hasn’t won anything big in his time at United. If he stays, and I hope he does, United have shown him what they’re building here.
“They’ve signed Sancho and Varane this summer and if they could get someone like Haaland next summer, it might show Pogba what United are trying to achieve.
“If they can win the Premier League, what better way of getting him to sign a new contract and stay a bit longer?”
