Manchester United eyeing smart strategy for summer deals, same way Varane and Mount deals were concluded

Manchester United are set to target players in the summer who are in the final year of their current contracts, according to reports.

Money is seemingly very tight at Manchester United with the Red Devils not signing a single player on loan or on a permanent deal in January, despite the club’s predicament in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag’s future at the club is unclear but reports over the week had detailed that the Dutchman had made demands for the board to spend money in the summer.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos set to see their 25 per cent acquisition of the Red Devils ratified in the next few days, plans may be beginning to take shape.

United’s summer plan

According to a report from ESPN, the Red Devils will be targeting players in the final year of their contract to try and get them for a decent price.

Despite the concern over a lack of money in the summer for transfers, the report states that the Red Devils do have the capital to make some signings in the off-season.

The club did improve their financial situation in the January window with Jadon Sancho, Donny van de Beek and Facundo Pellistri among a plethora of players to leave the club.

Hannibal Mejbri and Alvaro Fernandez also departed the club with Sergio Reguilon’s loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur being cut short.

Despite this, finances are reportedly viewed as being ‘tight’ at this moment in time with targeting players who are coming to the end of their current contracts viewed as a good move by those at the club.

Who could United target?

Well, looking at Transfermarkt’s website to discover who has a year or less left on their contract provides some interesting names.

Looking at whose contract expires this summer, there is the unrealistic possibility of Kylian Mbappe but he seems destined for a move to Real Madrid. Adrien Rabiot, who has been heavily linked with United for years and Piotr Zielinski could be interesting midfield options for the Red Devils.

In 2025, Leroy Sane, Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David, Joshua Kimmich, Khepren Thuram and Ivan Toney are just some of the options for the Red Devils.

Targeting players whose contracts will be expiring in 2025 could be a smart move as long as they can improve the United squad and don’t add to the deadwood already at the club.

This same strategy saw United swoop for Raphael Varane in 2021 and Mason Mount in 2023, who had one year remaining on their deals at Real Madrid and Chelsea.
