Premier League side Manchester United are thrilled that Harry Kane will be staying at Tottenham this summer, according to reports.
Kane has been trying to secure a move away from Spurs all summer with Manchester City trying to get him to sign at the Etihad Stadium.
The England captain confirmed yesterday that he would be staying in north London for the time being after Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy refused to give into his demands.
Only Spurs emerge from Kane saga with any credit…
Levy was understood to be ‘deeply affronted’ by Kane’s attempts to engineer a transfer away from Spurs this summer despite telling the striker he ‘would listen to offers’ for him.
City’s best offer was £75m plus £25m of add-ons made back in June and The Athletic insisted on Thursday that ‘the move had been dead for weeks’.
Manchester United are one side who had been linked in previous months but their priority this summer was to get deals for Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane over the line.
And now Spanish website Fichajes claim that the news Kane would be staying at Tottenham was ‘widely celebrated’ at United as it gives them a chance to sign him next summer.
The Red Devils ‘consider the Tottenham player key to reinforce’ their forward line next summer and ‘they will have options to negotiate’ for Kane in a year’s time.
Old Trafford is now ‘one of the potential destinations’ for Kane next summer as Man Utd ‘needs’ a centre forward, especially when Edinson Cavani leaves in 2022.
Before Kane announced he was staying at Spurs this summer, Gary Neville urged Man Utd to complete a deal for the striker.
Neville said on Sky Sports: “I’m struggling to understand why Manchester United aren’t going that extra step this transfer window. Sancho’s £70 million was last year’s money.
“And I think with regards to Manchester United, they’ve always gone after the best player in the Premier League, the best English player, the best British player historically.
“Why is Martial, James, Lingard… you’re talking about potentially offloading a lot of wages there, potentially getting some transfer fees in.
“Why are they not going in for Harry Kane this week? Because if I think Harry Kane entered Manchester United you could get up to 90-95 points, without him [they won’t].
“They’re still going to have to replace [Edinson] Cavani and Martial next summer. Martial’s not going to do it, Cavani has only got one year left [on his contract].
“They’re going to have to buy a centre forward at some point. Why not get the man now and give Ole that impetus to get to that 90-point [target]. I don’t think they can with just Sancho and Varane.
“Manchester United will lose Martial and Cavani in the next 12 months, they’ll only have Mason Greenwood as a centre forward, [Marcus] Rashford [is best] on the left.
“I think Manchester United will need a centre forward in the next 12 months, the guy is available now if you pay £150m.
“You’ve got Martial, James, Mata and Lingard who I think, to be fair, we could do without them at the club. I personally think Kane coming in [to United] would be a differentiator.”
