Manchester City are the favourites to sign Vivianne Miedema ahead of the forward’s exit from WSL rivals Arsenal this summer.

Arsenal have confirmed that Women’s Super League record goalscorer Miedema will leave the club when her contract expires at the end of this season.

The Dutchwoman is understood to have interest from Europe and the USA, though WSL leaders City are favourites at this stage.

Miedema has been a prolific presence for the Gunners since her arrival from Bayern Munich, scoring 125 goals in 172 appearances for the North Londoners in all competitions.

She won the Golden Boot as Arsenal won the WSL in 2018/19, scoring a single-season record 22 goals, and was the league’s leading scorer again the following season.

Miedema has also won the FA Women’s League Cup on three occasions for Arsenal, but will depart at the end of the current campaign in search of a new challenge.

At international level, Miedema is the record goalscorer for the Netherlands, having netted 95 times in 118 caps for the Oranje.

Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar has thanked the 27-year-old for her contribution during seven years with the Gunners.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, we thank Viv for her huge contribution towards the success of the team during her seven years with us,” Edu told the club’s official website.

“Viv’s goals and overall performances as an Arsenal player have been of the highest quality, and she has created so many wonderful memories for us over the years. We wish Viv and her family the best of health and happiness for the future.”
