Raphael Varane is unlikely to start Manchester United’s Premier League opener against Leeds United on Saturday after another transfer delay, according to The Athletic. An official announcement of his arrival was expected on Wednesday, but it looks set to be pushed back further.

The Athletic report that Varane completed his Man United medical on Wednesday but is yet to sign on the dotted line.

He arrived at the Aon Training Complex in Carrington on Tuesday for initial fitness checks before returning on Wednesday to conclude proceedings.

However, the ‘finer points on contract terms’ are still to be finalised before the club can officially announce their new defensive signing.

He should complete his move before the weekend, but an announcement on Wednesday is now out of the question.

In what will come as a massive blow for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, The Athletic also claim that the likelihood of Varane starting United’s Premier League campaign is low.

The 28-year-old is set for a spot among Solskjaer’s substitutes at most against Leeds at Old Trafford on Saturday.

His delayed transfer has meant he is yet to train with his new teammates at the Aon Training Complex, so his match fitness will need to be assessed.

However, Solskjaer should start his other marquee signing, Jadon Sancho, after the 21-year-old winger joined training on Monday.

Sancho finally completed a move to United earlier this summer, joining in a £73million deal from Borussia Dortmund.

He became the club’s fourth most expensive signing, trailing Paul Pogba (£89m), Harry Maguire (£80m) and Romelu Lukaku (£75m).

Despite his impending debut, fans will be disappointed by the prospect of not seeing Varane step out as a United player for the first time at Old Trafford.

There has been widespread and warranted frustration among the United fanbase about the time it has taken to sign Varane.

A £34m fee, rising to £41m, was agreed between the Premier League giants and Real Madrid 16 days ago.

However, issues with the France international’s Visa and then a quarantine period after arriving in England prompted significant delays.

Varane completing his medical is a big plus, though, and seeing his name among the bench will undoubtedly fill those present and watching on TV with excitement come Saturday afternoon.
