Manchester United stand at the crossroads ahead of another major moment in their recent history.

After sticking with one manager for more than two decades, Old Trafford bosses are now facing up to the prospect of hiring their fifth manager in eight years.

The monumental task of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at the head of English football’s most successful club has already claimed David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has lasted the longest of any of Ferguson’s successors, but after almost three years in charge he is on borrowed time.

The shoots of optimism brought about by last season’s second-placed finish are long in the past, with United embarrassed, at home, by their two biggest rivals in back-to-back games.

A number of names are already in the frame, with the Sun suggesting a shortlist of potential candidates has already been drawn up.

At the top of that list is believed to be Brendan Rodgers, whilst Ajax’s Erik ten Hag, Zinedine Zidane are also under consideration.

But a name that continues to be linked with the post is Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino.

After his exploits with Southampton and Tottenham, the Argentine has become one of the top names in the coaching circle and despite missing out on the Ligue 1 title last term, his stock remains high.

According to The Telegraph , Pochettino is open to a move back to the Premier League and has appeared to have a frosty relationship with the club’s billionaire owners.

PSG find themselves 10 points clear at the top of their domestic league, but there is a feeling the 49-year-old’s fate will be determined by their Champions League exploits.

Another failure in Europe would likely see him removed, opening up the possibility of United finally landing a manager they have been linked with on numerous occasions.

It’s a PR phrase that will likely turn the stomach of some, but his commitment of turning to the academy will be a major selling point.

United have a staggering record when it comes to giving youngsters a chance, with an unbroken run spanning well over 4000 matches with a homegrown player in the starting XI.

Speaking during his Tottenham days, Pochettino spoke passionately about developing English talent and offered a host of academy graduates at all of his clubs.

“I feel when I arrived in Spain and now in England in which way can we say ‘thank you’ to the country that opened the door when I didn’t speak English,” he said.

“And how people treated me and my family and my staff which was really well. It’s a way to say thank you to the Premier League and the people who trust in you.”

When it comes to the final decision on the latest name to try and bring United back to former glories, his willingness to buy into the United way could prove pivotal.
