Man Utd’s best and worst Champions League groups including horror Bayern Munich

MANCHESTER UNITED will learn their Champions League opponents on Thursday as the draw for the group stage is revealed.

The Red Devils have not tasted European glory since 2008 and will be hoping they are given a favourable route to the knockout stages.

But it could be tough for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men as they have been placed in pot 2 for the group stage draw.

As a result, they could face a number of European heavyweights in the first round of the competition.

The pots for the draw are as follows:

Pot 1: Chelsea, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Lille, Sporting Lisbon.

Pot 2: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Sevilla, Borussia Dortmund.

Pot 3: Porto, Ajax, Shakhtar Donetsk, RB Leipzig, FC Salzburg, Benfica, Atalanta, Zenit St Petersburg.

Pot 4: Besiktas, Dynamo Kiev, Club Brugge, Young Boys, AC Milan, Malmo, VfL Wolfsburg, Sheriff Tiraspol.

Man Utd’s last European triumph came after they beat Chelsea on penalties in the 2008 finalCredit: PA Under Uuefa rules, no teams from the same nation are allowed to be drawn against one another in the group stage.

This means Man Utd cannot draw Chelsea or Manchester City, but they could still face a huge team.

Bayern Munich, who won the Champions League in 2020, will be the side Solskjaer is keen to avoid from the seeded pot.

But the Red Devils will be eyeing up the possibility of drawing Sporting Lisbon, who are probably the weakest side in pot 1.

The team to avoid in pot 3 will be 2020-21 quarter-finalists Porto who dumped out Juventus and ex-Man Utd man Cristiano Ronaldo in dramatic fashion last season.

And seven-time European champions AC Milan are the bogey side everyone will want to side-step in pot 4.

Alternatively, United could be on the end of a much kinder draw and find themselves up against Austrian champions FC Salzburg and Swedish champions Malmo.

One team Solskjaer’s men have managed to dodge is Paris Saint-Germain as they have been put in pot 2.

This means both Man Utd and Liverpool will avoid Lionel Messi’s new club in the group stages, but Chelsea and Man City could be drawn against them.
