Manchester United have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka, DYLAN TERRY reports.

Goretzka, 26, joined the Bundesliga champions from Schalke in 2018 and his performances have caught the eye of those at Old Trafford.

He has just one year left on his deal – but Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann revealed he is ‘confident’ the midfielder will extend his contract beyond 2022.

With the future of Man Utd midfielder Paul Pogba uncertain, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to line up a replacement.

But Nagelsmann’s recent comments have dampened the Red Devils’ hopes of luring Goretzka to the Premier League.

GOOD MORNING UNITED FANS

Manchester United will reportedly demand £20million for midfielder Andreas Pereira, who spent last season on loan at Serie A club Lazio.

Defender Axel Tuanzebe could also leave Old Trafford this summer, with Aston Villa thought to be close to completing a loan deal.

And the Red Devils will NOT make a move for free agent Jerome Boateng, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

United are believed to still be interested in Kieran Trippier, although the player’s current employers Atletico Madrid are reportedly holding out for £34m.

But midfielder Saul Niguez is available for transfer with Atletico reportedly giving his representatives the green light to pursue a move.

Technical director Darren Fletcher and director of football John Murtough have been credited with persuading Raphael Varane to move to Manchester.

The defender’s transfer is expected to be finalised shortly, with club legend Paddy Crerand calling Varane a ‘class act’.

Crerand, who played for United between 1963 and 1971, added: “I don’t think there are many top central defenders anywhere. He reminds of Rio Ferdinand actually – that’s how good he is.

“He’s excellent with the ball at his feet and he makes everything look easy, exactly the same as Rio.”

TRIPPIER LATEST

Kieran Trippier is desperate to complete a move to Manchester United this summer, according to reports.

The England full-back has been linked with the Red Devils for weeks, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thought to be keen on the ex-Tottenham star.

And Bury-born Trippier is also rumoured to be interested in moving to Manchester.

But with two years remaining on his contract, the player’s current employers Atletico Madrid are digging their heels in.

The Spanish giants are reportedly holding out for a £34million release clause to be triggered.

RAPH DAZZLED

Darren Fletcher has been credited with helping Manchester United sign Raphael Varane.

The club’s technical director reportedly helped persuade the Real Madrid star to move to Old Trafford.

According to ESPN, former United midfielder Fletcher and director of football John Murtough played an important role in convincing Varane to join the club.

The signing is a major coup for the Red Devils with Varane’s arrival expected to help them mount a prolonged title challenge.

VAN DE BULK

Donny van de Beek has undergone a radical change in nutrition and gym work over the summer to get in tip-top shape for Manchester United.

The Dutchman endured a desperately disappointing first season in England, starting only four Premier League games for his new club.

GORETZKA LATEST

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is confident Manchester United target Leon Goretzka will sign a new contract at the club.

The 26-year-old has one year remaining on his contract in Munich, with United reportedly keen on Goretzka should Paul Pogba leave the club.

But Nagelsmann is hopeful Goretzka will stay, saying: “I’m not involved enough that I have a say every day. I stay out of these issues.

“Of course I have talked to him about my plans for him. I’ve told him I’d be happy if he extended and I’m also confident.”

VARANE ‘CLASS ACT’

Manchester United icon Paddy Crerand has praised incoming signing Raphael Varane.

The Red Devils have agreed a deal with Real Madrid for the defender and his move to Manchester is expected to be finalised shortly.

Crerand, who played for United between 1963 and 1971, said: “He’s a class act.

“He played in the 2018 World Cup for France and stood out. He’s a totally class act.

“I don’t think there are many top central defenders anywhere. He reminds of Rio Ferdinand actually – that’s how good he is.

“He’s excellent with the ball at his feet and he makes everything look easy, exactly the same as Rio.

“That’s because they’re terrific players. They make things look easy. They can read the game well.

“I think he’ll be a great signing for United and at a great age as well; he’s been there and done it.”

SAUL LATEST

Saul Niguez is available for transfer this summer with Atletico Madrid reportedly giving his representatives the green light to pursue a move.

The midfielder, 26, hopes to have his future sorted out over the next week, with Premier League clubs circulating.

Saul and his representatives will travel to the UK on Sunday in an attempt to negotiate a move, report The Mirror.

Manchester United are believed to be the favourites to land Saul, with Liverpool also said to be interested.

And with Paul Pogba’s future up in the air Ed Woodward and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could view the Spaniard as the ideal replacement.

Atletico will reportedly listen to offers between £35-£45million for Saul, despite having five years left to run on his contract.

WAYNE REIGNS

Wayne Rooney is the greatest centre forward Gary Neville has seen at Manchester United.

Speaking in January, Neville said: “For me he [Rooney] was the best centre forward I ever saw at Manchester United and ever played with.

“I have him number one, up front, Cristiano Ronaldo alongside him in every single one of the best Manchester United teams that I played alongside.”

HAALAND LATEST

Manchester United will go all-out to sign Erling Haaland next summer, according to reports.

The 21-year-old has scored 57 goals in 59 appearances for Dortmund but has a release clause of just £68million next season.

Chelsea have been interested in Haaland this summer, but United fancy their chances of signing him next summer.

Both the arrival of Haaland’s former teammate Jadon Sancho to United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s new three-year deal have boosted the Red Devils’ chances of tying up a deal next summer.

Fellow Norwegians Haaland and Solskajer have a good working relationship, having previously worked with each other at Molde.

PRICE SET

Manchester United will reportedly demand a £20million fee for Andreas Pereira.

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, the Red Devils have decided to cash in on the 25-year-old.

The Brazilian Pereira spent last season on loan at Lazio, scoring once in 26 appearances in Rome.

After an initially promising start to life at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal, Pereira’s career has stalled in Manchester and after three loan spells in the last five years Pereira may finally be permanently on his way out of Old Trafford.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Kieran Trippier is desperate to complete a move to Manchester United this summer, ETIENNE FERMIE reports.

The England full-back has been linked with the Red Devils for weeks, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen on the former Spurs player.

With two years remaining on his contract, Atletico Madrid are digging their heels in.

They are reportedly holding out for a rumoured £34million release clause to be triggered.

But according to Diario Sport in Spain, Trippier himself is now pushing to make the move.

TROPHY CABINET

And here is the United trophy cabinet that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be aiming to add to next season.

The Norwegian has been in charge at Old Trafford for two-and-a-half years but is yet to pick up any silverware to show for his efforts.

UNITED MEAN BUSINESS

Manchester United have not been afraid to splash the cash this summer after spending a combined £107million on Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

And it doesn’t look like United have finished yet.

They’re strongly linked with a £40million for Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez, with Liverpool also said to be interested in signing the 26-year-old.

Manchester United’s big business in the market comes as the Red Devils seek to mount a title challenge next season and bid to win their first trophy since the 2017 Europa League final.

KARIM’S FAREWELL

Real Madrid talisman Karim Benzema has sent Raphael Varane a classy farewell message after the Frenchman’s move to Manchester United.

Benzema said: “My brother, what more can I say except that you are a legend here.

“I will miss you I wish you the best in your new challenge with all the happiness.

“You deserve everything you have accomplished and I wish you even more.”

NO JEROME

Manchester United will not make a move for free agent Jerome Boateng, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

The 32-year-olds Bayern Munich contract expired this summer, with a number of clubs reportedly interested in his signature.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be happy with his options at centre-back following Raphael Varane’s arrival at Old Trafford.

The quartet of Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are thought to be enough for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with a move for the German international Boateng looking increasingly unlikely.

TUAN LOAN LATEST

Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe is set to seal a loan move to Aston Villa.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a loan move to Newcastle, but it’s the Villans who are in pole position to snap him up.

Tuanzebe spent 18 months on loan at Villa Park from 2018 to 2019, helping Villa to promotion to the Premier League.

And with the arrival of Raphael Varane to Old Trafford, game time for Tuanzebe is likely to be limited, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer himself expecting Tuanzebe to be loaned out this season.

OLE AT THE WHEEL

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s new deal could put Manchester United in pole position to land Erling Haaland next year, PHIL THOMAS reports.

United narrowly missed out on the Norwegian hitman when he left Red Bull Salzburg for Borussia Dortmund 18 months ago.

Haaland turned his back on the chance to move to Old Trafford then with so much uncertainty over whether Solskjaer would stay in charge.

The 21-year-old has a close relationship with his fellow countryman and was unwilling to take the chance on moving to Manchester if the manager was about to be sacked.

Both the striker and his father, former City star Alf-Inge, admitted they did not want to risk working under a boss they had no vibe for if Solskjaer was axed.
