Reports claim Manchester United have a leading agent working on the appointment of a new manager behind the scenes and he is confident of prising Brendan Rodgers out of Leicester. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job appears to be safe for now but the Norwegian’s long-term future at Old Trafford remains in serious doubt.

The 2-0 home defeat against Manchester City appeared to be the first time during his tenure that the fans began to turn on the manager as supporters made their feelings known at the end of the match.

But problematically for United, there are not many suitable replacements currently available.

Furthermore, senior figures inside the club were also pushing for the board to give Solskjaer time to turn things around.

That includes Sir Alex Ferguson, who defended his former player in the aftermath of the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool.

According to The Sun, United already have a leading agent sounding out potential replacements for Solskjaer though.

With Antonio Conte and Zinedine Zidane now out of the equation, only Rodgers and Erik ten Hag remain realistic targets.

And the report claims there is confidence from the agent’s side that he could get the Northern Irishman out of Leicester, despite his long-term contract at the King Power Stadium.

It’s understood Rodgers does have a release clause included in his contract which is only accessible for Champions League teams.

United would therefore have the opportunity to bring him through the door, permitting they were willing to pay up.

Rodgers’ former ties to Liverpool could also have a part to play but it appears United are willing to forget about his previous spell at Anfield in order to appoint him as their new boss.

Manchester City are also believed to be in the hunt for Rodgers as Pep Guardiola’s eventual successor.

The Leicester manager was recently linked with the Newcastle job but made it clear he will respect his contract in the East Midlands.

“100 per cent,” Rodgers replied when asked if he was committed to Leicester. “I’ve got a contract until 2025. I absolutely love being here.

“I’m very fortunate, I’ve got a great chief executive (Susan Whelan) who runs the club, and a director of football (Jon Rudkin) I have a close relationship with, and a group of players I really enjoy working with. We have an infrastructure here that allows us to compete.

“For me, as long as they don’t want to move me, I’m very happy here.

“I’ve seen the reports around it. It doesn’t help anyone, particularly Steve and Newcastle. It’s the type of week I don’t like in the modern game.”
