Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United have ended their relationship by mutual consent, leaving the Red Devils light in their attacking options as we approach the January transfer windowVideo LoadingVideo UnavailableCristiano Ronaldo’s Man Utd contract terminatedManchester United are ready to act in the January transfer window as they look to replace Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward and the Red Devils ended their relationship by mutual consent this week, following the player’s explosive tell-all interview with Piers Morgan. Ronaldo has been used sporadically by Erik ten Hag this term, but his exit still leaves the squad light in the final third. As a result the MEN claims United are ready to “push the button” in search of a replacement come the New Year. Ronaldo was the club’s top scorer last term, but has only scored once in the Premier League prior to his departure. Ten Hag’s side are by no means prolific and are looking for some more firepower. Anthony Martial had been the central point of attack throughout pre-season, with Ronaldo absent, and was poised to begin the season there before an injury ruled him out. Marcus Rashford has also played through the middle, but a new face is now on Ten Hag’s shopping list. The Dutchman has several forward options, but the majority of them prefer operating from wider areas, rather than through the middle. Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Anthony Elanga and the blossoming Alejandro Garnacho are all pushing for starting roles. Rashford is the team’s top scorer in the league, but he has scored just four times. In all competitions the Englishman has notched eight times, but that total is still a concern for a team looking to challenge for major honours. PSV’s Cody Gakpo, who scored for the Netherlands in their opening World Cup game, is firmly on the club’s radar as is Memphis Depay, who has fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona. Back in the summer United made a bid for Mark Arnautovic and had an interest in Benjamin Sesko before he signed for RB Leipzig. United are looking to assist director of data science Dominic Jordan by adding four more data scientists but think they can quickly identify which players they want to pursue. United currently sit fifth and have their sights set on a return to the Champions League. Their goal difference is currently 0, which hasn’t been helped by heavy defeats to the likes of Brentford and Manchester City. Ten Hag knows that his squad needs several transfer windows but adding a quality forward will make his life easier going forward. Erling Haaland’s impact across the city at the Etihad has underlined how a prolific striker can transform a team with the Norwegian giving Manchester City a fresh dynamic.
