Man Utd set to agree deal for 31-year-old star

Manchester United may renew their pursuit of defender Kieran Trippier ahead of the January transfer market.

That’s the view of former England and Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking to Football Insider about manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to change the system after the 5-0 defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

United held discussions over signing the 31-year-old Atletico Madrid star in the summer and the transfer was close enough at one stage that Football Insider claimed he told friends he expected to join the club.

When quizzed by Football Insider if interest could be rekindled in light of the Red Devils’ formation change, Paul said:

“There’s the potential for them to go back in for Trippier in January if Solskjaer is going to stick with that system.

“Trippier is the perfect player for that system. We all know he is great at both attacking and defending. He’s been doing particularly well in Spain.

“It is very early to talk about Man United sticking to a system that has paid dividends once in two games.

“But if it’s true, and Trippier does want to return to England, he’d be the ideal signing for United.”

He has made 14 appearances for Los Rojiblancos across all competitions this season. In the winter transfer window, he’ll have 18 months left on his deal in the Spanish capital.
