Manchester United splashed the cash on several big-name signings in the summer transfer window in an attempt to challenge for the Premier League title. First came Jadon Sancho, who joined from Borussia Dortmund in a move worth £73million.

Then it was the turn of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, who sealed his long-awaited £45m arrival in August.

And then of course came the big one out of nowhere. Cristiano Ronaldo’s sensational return to Old Trafford was completed on deadline day.

The arrival of those household names brought about a dramatic shift at Old Trafford towards getting behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and backing him once more.

And it all began so well. A 5-1 win over Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds was followed up with a draw at Southampton, a win over Wolves, and a 4-1 victory against Steve Bruce’s Newcastle on Ronaldo’s debut.

Talk emerged that it may just be United’s season, after several in the doldrums.

Next came Young Boys, where a howler from Jesse Lingard would gift the Swiss champions a famous win over the English giants. It was United’s first blip of the season, but it didn’t last long.

It was all quickly forgotten when it was Lingard who came off the bench to score a fantastic curling effort to win the game at the last against David Moyes’ West Ham at the London Stadium.

But since then, it’s all gone so horribly wrong, and it seems Solskjaer’s days at United are now numbered.

The club icon can’t seem to get the best out of his new signings and the mood has shifted once more among fans. The majority are now seemingly against him leading the club forward.

Such a shift is a big problem, and one in which according to The Sun, United’s owners, the Glazers, are very much aware of.

Signing the likes of Sancho, Varane and Ronaldo was by no means cheap and the very least the owners could expect is to see some form of silverware to show for their investment. But that seems so very far away now.

United were convincingly beaten by Manchester City 2-0 in the derby on Sunday and it was a game in which they never looked like winning from the get-go.

The Red Devils are now in sixth place, five points off the Champions League places, and nine back from Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea.

Quite how long Solskjaer will have to turn things around is not yet clear, but a defeat against Watford at Vicarage Road in the first game back after

the international break could spell the end for the Norwegian boss.

Solskjaer’s side will then travel to Spain to face Villarreal at El Madrigal in what is a crucial contest in determining their fate in the Champions League.
