Phil Jones has endured a nightmare spell at Manchester United for more than a few years now given his injury woes at the Premier League giants. However, that could be set to end if reports are to be believed – with 13 clubs supposedly interested in the defender.

Jones, now 29, joined United for £16million back in 2011 from Blackburn Rovers as a youngster.

Having earned glowing recommendations from Sir Alex Ferguson – who famously said “Jones has the potential to be our best ever player” – it seemed the Preston-born prodigy was sert for a successful career at Old Trafford.

But fast forward 10 years and that quote could not be further from the truth, with Jones having not made a senior appearance for 22 months.

His last game came against Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup in January 2020.

And his last Premier League appearance came just days before that in a shock 2-0 home loss to Burnley, which effectively signalled the end of his United career.

But there is hope for Jones just yet in his career, with a report by the Sun claiming that 13 teams are interested in a transfer for the injury-prone centre-back.

Watford and Newcastle are two sides reportedly willing to offer him a Premier League lifeline, with the pair boasting two of the worst four defences in the Premier League.

And former United legend Wayne Rooney is supposedly also interested in the defender, with the Liverpudlian keen to take him to Championship basement boys Derby County – although a deal to take him to Pride Park would almost certainly be a loan move.

Wages will likely be an issue in bringing Jones to the Championship, where other unnamed sides are also interested in his services.

And with his contract expiring at the end of next season, United may be willing to pay a portion of his wages to free up part of their wage budget.

Jones recently spoke out about his decision to leave social media after torrents of abuse and opened up on the toll his injury struggles have taken on him.

He said to MUTV: “I stepped away from social media a long time ago, but it’s difficult because all your friends read it, your family read it and they support you, they want the best for you.

“They don’t want to see their mate, their husband, their dad getting slaughtered all over the papers or all over the media, so it’s tough because mentally I was going through a tough time and to read stuff as well.

“It’s difficult, but it’s something I’ve learned to deal with, especially over the time I’ve been at United and the more experience you get, the older you get, the better you learn to deal with those things.

United currently sit sixth in the Premier League, but are already nine points off leaders Chelsea after a disastrous start to the new season.
