MISSING MAN

Manchester United return to action in the Champions League on Wednesday as Villarreal visit Old Trafford.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be desperate for three points after a shock defeat to Young Boys last week.

According to El Periodico Mediterraneo, Yellow Submarine talisman Gerard Moreno could miss Wednesday’s clash.

That’s after the 29-year-old has been sidelined for the last three games with a thigh injury.

United fans do not have fond memories of Moreno, after the Spaniard netted against them in the Europa League final last season.

TOP CLASS TUCHEL

Paul Merson believes Manchester United would win the title this season… IF Thomas Tuchel was in charge at Old Trafford.

Writing for the Daily Star, Merson said: “If Thomas Tuchel was manager of Manchester United, they would win the league. He is that good.

“United are not going to win the league this season, in my opinion. But if they had a manager like Tuchel it would be different.

“He sees the game. What he did last Sunday was a masterstroke, taking off Mason Mount and putting on N’Golo Kante.”

SHOULDN’T HAVE STOOD

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Aston Villa’s late winner should have been chalked off for offside.

Kortney Hause’s 88th minute strike was the difference between the teams, although Solskjaer was convinced it shouldn’t have stood.

“You can take it when it’s a good goal conceded against you, but that’s offside,” he said.

“He’s touched David as he heads the ball. How that’s a goal and Leicester have not got their goals, I just can’t see the consistency and that’s clearly offside.”

INJURY REPORT

Manchester United’s Champions League plans have been thrown into chaos following Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire’s injuries against Aston Villa.

Shaw was to first to go down injured in the 34th minute of United’s 1-0 loss to Villa with a suspected groin injury.

The left-back initially had to get checked out but seemed okay to carry on.

However, it became clear that his game was over when he went down in agony and had to be replaced by Diogo Dalot as half-time drew closer.

And then Maguire made Solskjaer’s headache even worse when he left to pitch to get checked out just 15 minutes into the second period.

NORDI CHASE

Man Utd want to sign RB Leipzig defender Nordi Mukiele, according to reports.

Fichajes are reporting that Man Utd want to sign Mukiele as competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The France international has a contract with the Bundesliga club until June 2023.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly wanted to sign a right-back in the summer, with Kieran Trippier linked with a move to Old Trafford.

United failed to pay his £30million asking price, and have now seemingly moved on to alternative targets.

Credit: Reuters HIGH SPIRITS

Cristiano Ronaldo is in high spirits, despite yesterday’s defeat to Aston Villa.

To people’s surprise Ronaldo didn’t step up to take the 93rd minute penalty, which was missed by Bruno Fernandes.

And CR7 has said: “This is only the beginning, but in a competition as strong as the Premier League, every point counts!

“We must react immediately, get back on our feet and show our true strength.”

BRUNO’S RECORD

Bruno Fernandes’ miss from the spot yesterday was only the second time the Portuguese midfielder has failed to convert from twelve yards for United.

He had scored 21 out of 22 prior to yesterday, but blazed over the bar in the dying embers of yesterday’s game.

His success rate for the Red Devils from the spot is still an impressive 91%, and in his career has netted 42 penalties, with just four misses.

SOLSKJAER SPEAKS

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was quizzed on whether Cristiano Ronaldo could have taken the penalty.

He said: “As I said, Bruno has been excellent and Cristiano is probably the one that has scored the most penalties in England before.

“We have got great takers here but it is just a missed opportunity for us to get a point.”

‘PUT YOUR MORTGAGE ON IT’

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed he’d usually ‘put his mortgage’ on Bruno Fernandes converting from twelve yards.

“But Fernandes missed a crucial last-gasp penalty to grab a point, with Soslkjaer saying: That’s football. He’ll step forward every day of the week for the club and the team. Sometimes it just doesn’t go your way.

“That is part and parcel of it. It is such a fine line between heaven and hell and unfortunately today he missed.

“But you know Bruno has been excellent. He is such a good penalty taker and today you’d back him with your mortgage, I would guess.

“What I didn’t enjoy and didn’t like was the way they crowded the referee around the penalty spot and tried to affect Bruno.

“It clearly worked for them but that’s not great to see but they achieved what they needed to.”

RONAL-NO

Crsitiano Ronaldo managed just 37 touches of the ball during yesterday’s defeat to Aston Villa.

It’s safe to assume he’ll be on the next penalty United get though…

STAT ATTACK

Aston Villa won at Old Trafford yesterday with Kortney Hause’s goal being their only shot on target in the match.

Manchester United meanwhile mustered just four shots on target from TWENTY-EIGHT efforts.

MORNING UNITED FANS

How are you feeling after yesterday’s defeat to Aston Villa?

Both Chelsea and Liverpool also dropped points meaning the Red Devils are still just one point off the top of the table.

But the result means it’s now three losses in the last four games, and there are some murmurs of discontent starting to be heard at Old Trafford.

The next chance for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to right their wrongs is on Wednesday night.

They take on Villarreal in the Champions League.

NEXT FIVE

After today’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa, Man Utd are competing in Europe.

They face Villarreal at Old Trafford, and they’ll be looking to get revenge for last season’s Europa League loss.

After that, Everton travel to Old Trafford.

FERNANDES REACTS

Bruno Fernandes has reacted to his crucial penalty miss on Instagram.

The midfielder said: “Nobody is more frustrated and disappointed than me for missing the penalty and the consequent defeat.

“I’ve always assumed my responsibilities and I’ve always embraced them under pressure in moments like this.

“Today, I failed. But I took a step forward and faced the challenge with the same ambition and responsibility as when, on the many other occasions, the ball ended up in the net.

“Criticism and contrasting opinions are a big part of football.

“I’ve learned to live with it, even using them to drive me on, and I consider it all a very important part of my commitment to never stop trying to improve and to become the best player I can possibly be, for me and the team.

“Today I once again took the responsibility given to me almost since I joined United and I will take it again without any fear or dread whenever called upon.

“The most important thing for me is to win together and I’ll always do everything I can to help my teammates and the club to be the best we can be.

“I’m a player who leaves everything on the pitch, with great desire and commitment. And that’s what I’ll continue to do.

“Thank you for all your support after the final whistle! Hearing you chanting my name in the stadium was very emotional… I will come back stronger for me, because these are the standards I hold myself to, but most of all for my teammates and our fans who have always supported us.”

OFF DAY

Bruno Fernandes missed a crucial penalty in the dying minutes of today’s loss to Aston Villa.

The midfielder blazed a spot-kick over the crossbar.

Man Utd have issued a message of support for Fernandes, who will undoubtedly be feeling down.

BEST TRANSFER XI

Here’s the transfer XI made up of the best Premier League summer signings 2021.

Man Utd’s Ronaldo, Sancho and Varane make the team.

40 GOING ON 20

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has echoed Cristiano Ronaldo’s mum’s sentiments that the Portugal legend could play at the top level at 40, writes JON BOON.

The Manchester United forward turns 37 next February, but has made a blistering start to his second coming at Old Trafford – scoring four times already for the Red Devils.

His form and fitness prompted mother Dolores Aveiro that he will play until he’s 40.

And that’s a belief his Norwegian boss shares too.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he still played when he was 40, not at all, because of the way he looks after himself,” Solskjaer revealed.

“That’s the key to it – and of course some genes. There must be some genes as well, some DNA in there.

“He has put every single ounce of energy and effort into becoming the player he is and has been, so he deserves every single little plaudit that he gets for his physical state.

“What’s more impressive is when you have achieved as much as he has, he’s still as hungry. His mentality is still absolutely spot-on and that’s a desire from inside that he’s going to keep going until his head says, ‘no, I’ve given everything now’.

“Hopefully it will last a few more years. Linford Christie (who won the Olympic 100m aged 32 in 1992) was quite an age when he won his gold as well, so age is never a problem.”

HAVE A BUTCHERS

It’s the latest in a long line of dubious tributes to Manchester United talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, writes TRISTAN BARCLAY.

A mural of the star has been painted to honour his return to the city after 12 years away.

But fans are claiming the picture outside The Trafford pub looks more like EastEnders character Pat Butcher than the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

And United fans were not afraid to have their say after the club posted a snap of the mural on their Instagram account.

Fan ‘dipsMUFC’ wrote on Twitter: “Is it me or does that ‘Ronaldo’ mural look more like Pat Butcher? Just missing the earrings.”

SOL SEARCHING

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is yet to win a trophy with Man Utd.

DON’T MUK IT UP

Man Utd want to sign RB Leipzig defender Nordi Mukiele, according to reports.

Fichajes are reporting that Man Utd want to sign Mukiele as competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The France international has a contract with the Bundesliga club until June 2023.

And the fact he can play in midfield attracts the Red Devils towards him.

RON REACTS

Cristiano Ronaldo has reacted to today’s loss on Instagram.

He said: “This is only the beggining, but in a competition as strong as the Premier League, every point counts!

“We must react immediately, get back on our feet and show our true strength.”

FACT ATTACK

Relive Ronaldo’s journey.

RON TOP

Cristiano Ronaldo is Man Utd’s biggest export to date.

EXCLUSIVE: BIT FISHY

Cristiano Ronaldo is so hungry for glory that he has convinced Manchester United chefs to add his favourite grub to the menu in the club canteen, writes PHIL THOMAS.

Ronaldo is super strict when it comes to his diet, which allows him to eat up to six times a day, and was asked to provide a list of his preferred foods.

Top of the list was a traditional Portuguese stew called Bacalhau, made with salt cod and eggs, which didn’t cause too much of a stir among his team-mates.

Yet certain other choices did, as a United insider said: “He also loves octopus, but most of the lads won’t go there – even if it clearly works for Ronny!

“Cristiano is very much into his proteins, stuff like slices of ham, eggs and avocados, and the chefs are trying to help him with a little taste of home.”

ED’S BACK

Edinson Cavani is back playing for Man Utd.
