Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he phoned Cristiano Ronaldo as soon as the news of a possible move to Manchester City was made public on Thursday evening. The mercurial 36-year-old will now join Manchester United in a sensational return to Old Trafford, with the club announcing that an agreement has been reached subject to personal terms, a medical and visa clearance.
City began to consider a move for Ronaldo after Pep Guardiola’s top target, Harry Kane, declared that he would be staying at Tottenham earlier this week.
Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, contacted the club to offer his client’s services and a deal was understood to be close until Friday afternoon.
However, City quickly pulled out of the proposed switch, giving United a free run at his signature.
The Red Devils thrashed out an agreement with Juventus in a matter of hours, with the Italian giants set to receive a fee of £15million plus another £7m in add-ons.
Ferdinand, who made 455 appearances for United between 2002 and 2014, has revealed that he spoke to Ronaldo before the move was announced in order to convince him to snub City and return to Old Trafford.

The 42-year-old told FIVE that he could not bear the thought of his former team-mate plying his trade at the Etihad Stadium and promptly questioned the Portuguese forward over the proposed transfer.
“Sir Alex Ferguson would have been exactly the same,” explained Ferdinand.
“He would have hated to see Cristiano in a Man City shirt. Just like any other person that’s been connected for a long time at this football club.
“I rang him straight away: ‘What’s going on? Tell me you’re lying!’
“I’m like all the fans, I’m exactly the same and we are all like that: ‘Please tell me you’re not going there’.”
Ronaldo becomes United’s fourth summer signing after the arrivals of Jadon Sancho, Tom Heaton and Raphael Varane earlier in the window.
Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinted that a move for the five-time Ballon D’Or winner was on the cards earlier on Friday, suggesting that the door would always be open for him at Old Trafford.
“He is a legend of this club, the greatest player of all time if you ask me,” the 47-year-old told reporters.

“I was fortunate enough to play with him. I coached him when I got my job.
“He almost retired me because that Wolverhampton game, when I got injured, he kept switching sides.
“He is such a tremendous human being as well. Let’s see what happens with Cristiano. Everyone who has played with him has a soft spot for him.
“We’ve always had a good communication. Bruno [Fernandes] has been talking to him. He knows what we feel about him.
“If he was ever going to move away from Juventus, he knows we’re here.”
