Manchester United need to clear up Diogo Dalot’s future before they can push ahead with trying to sign Kieran Trippier, according to reports. Trippier is a long-standing transfer target of United but the club have reached a stalemate in negotiations over Atletico Madrid in recent weeks.

United’s director of football negotiations Matt Judge entered discussions with Trippier’s camp over a transfer before the start of Euro 2020 in June.

Trippier is from the Manchester area and is keen to move back to England following a successful two years in Spain.

The 30-year-old right-back was a key component in Diego Simeone’s title-winning side last season and Atleti do not want to lose him.

Initial reports suggested the England international would be available for around £10million, but The Daily Star says the Spanish club are now holding out for £30m.

That asking price could prove to be immaterial though, because of Dalot.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday that the Trippier situation was ‘quiet’ at United because the club first need to ‘clarify’ the future of Dalot.

The Portuguese full-back spent last season on loan with AC Milan, who are interested in securing his services for another campaign.

Milan are happy to take Dalot on loan, but the clubs are yet to strike an agreement, with United asking for around £4m (€4.6m) in loan fees, while they also want an option to buy included in the deal.

Dalot joined United for £19m from Porto in June 2018 but has made just 35 appearances for the club since.

The 22-year-old performed well for Milan last season, making 21 appearances in Serie A at both right-back and left-back.

But it seems Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only wants two right-backs in his squad for the 2021/22 season.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was the undisputed first-choice in that position last season, but Trippier would undoubtedly bring new qualities to the team.

Trippier offers a greater attacking threat than Wan-Bissaka as well as quality from set pieces.

He has also shown with England over the past few years that he is more than capable of playing at left-back, as well as right wing-back in an altered tactical system.

While his skillset is undeniable, there are plenty of barriers to Trippier joining United.

According to The Star, United believe Atletico’s asking price is too high for someone now in his thirties and who is entering the final 12 months of his contract.

Atletico have an option to extend Trippier’s contract by another 12 months, which is one of the reasons they are holding out for £30m.
