More infoManchester United have decided to bid for Cody Gakpo in the January transfer window, according to reports. The Dutchman’s World Cup heroics showed Erik ten Hag that he can cut it at the top level but it may also have driven up his price tag, with PSV Eindhoven supposedly holding out for a club-record fee. United flirted with Gakpo during the summer before Ten Hag instead pushed to link up Antony in a bumper £84million deal. Recruiting another new attacker is thought to be a high priority at Old Trafford following Cristiano Ronaldo’s bitter exit last month. Gakpo is in scintillating form at club and international level, leading the goals and assist charts in the Eredivisie and bagging three times at the World Cup. The 23-year-old was supposedly valued at £35m before the season started but his fine displays have upped the stakes. According to The Telegraph, United are planning to test the waters with an opening £43.1m bid in the January transfer window. JUST IN: World Cup LIVE: Messi injury latest, France rocked by squad bug, Southgate talks planned Cody Gakpo has conceded that he would consider a move to Man Utd in January (Image: GETTY)There are also contrasting claims that PSV will hold out for an even higher fee with interest in the forward at an all-time high following his impressive displays in Qatar. Real Madrid are in the mix and Gakpo’s Dutch team-mate, Virgil van Dijk, appeared to usher him towards the Bernabeu in a recent press conference. But Gakpo himself may be more taken by the prospect of moving to the Premier League, admitting that he ‘would think about it’ if United came calling again. Leeds and Southampton both had a go at signing him during the summer but his recent exploits have almost certainly put him out of reach for the coming transfer window. DON’T MISS…Man Utd alerted to ‘next Paul Scholes’ but club may need transfer miracleChelsea ‘offered Atletico duo’ by Mendes after Broja injury blowTottenham could sign four top World Cup performers in January transfer windowIt remains to be seen whether PSV will take the money and run or play hard to get with the Red Devils. Sporting director Marcel Brands recently suggested that any sale should yield ‘a record fee’ for the Dutch outfit, which currently stands at the £36m gained from Hirving Lozano’s switch to Napoli in 2019. United chiefs have supposedly informed Ten Hag that a new attacker isn’t guaranteed after the New Year, despite Ronaldo leaving a vacancy to fill. Serious money was spent on the likes of Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro during the summer which took the club considerably over budget and may have an impact on future windows.  PSV chief Marcel Brands has admitted that the club want a record fee to part with Cody Gakpo (Image: GETTY)Still, that hasn’t stopped Ten Hag publicly laying his cards on the table, admitting: “Yes, we want to sign a forward in January but only when we find the right player. We will do everything in our power.”The Portuguese duo of Joao Felix and Goncalo Ramos have also been linked to Old Trafford following impactful displays at the World Cup. The former was compared to Kaka after a 6-1 win over Switzerland, during which Ramos announced himself to the world with a sensational hat-trick.
