Manchester United have agreed personal terms with Borussia Dortmund winger and long-term target Jadon Sancho, with negotiations at club level the next obstacle to overcome in their pursuit of the player, according to reports. The 21-year-old has been tracked by the Red Devils since his time at Manchester City, but could finally make the switch to Old Trafford this summer with the 20-time Premier League champions seemingly determined to push through a move this time around.

United stepped up their pursuit of Sancho a year ago by acting on their long-standing interest and submitting a formal offer for his services.

However, Dortmund’s nine-figure asking price was considered far too high in a transfer window heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and a move failed to materialise with both clubs ultimately refusing to budge.

As a result, the England winger stayed in Germany and went on to enjoy yet another impressive campaign, chipping in with 36 goals and assists in all competitions.

He also played a crucial role in Dortmund’s recent DFB-Pokal triumph, scoring in all but one of their six matches and bagging a brace in the final against RB Leipzig.

Sancho has established himself as one of his side’s standout players since joining the club for just £7.5million back in 2017, and it seems as though the Bundesliga heavyweights could end up making a significant profit on their man this summer.

United have finalised contract terms with the Camberwell native and will now look to strike an agreement with Dortmund over a transfer fee, according to Fabrizio Romano.

It is claimed that Sancho has accepted a five-year deal to join the Red Devils and ‘is not creating any problem’ with regards to his proposed move.

The Old Trafford side appear to fancy their chances of securing his signature, with club chiefs said to be confident that a successful outcome is edging ‘closer’ to fruition.

United’s hopes now rest entirely with Dortmund, who are said to be looking for around £82m in order to part ways with their prized asset.

This figure represents a significant drop in price when compared to last summer, with the club reportedly open to selling a number of first-team players in order to raise funds.

However, Sancho’s transfer fee was the crucial sticking point a year ago, and it remains to be seen whether United will be prepared to match Dortmund’s valuation.

The Red Devils are also believed to be keen on strengthening their defensive ranks, with the addition of a new centre-back to partner Harry Maguire understood to be high on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wish list.

The likes of Sevilla star Jules Kounde, Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Raphael Varane of Real Madrid have all been linked with the club in recent months, with the trio likely to command significant transfer fees of their own.

Meanwhile, former United defender Gary Neville recently suggested that a move for Sancho would aid the club’s Premier League title ambitions, highlighting the formidable strength in depth that Solskjaer would enjoy as a result of the Dortmund man’s arrival.

“Up front, you’ve got [Edinson] Cavani and [Mason] Greenwood, they’ll want Greenwood to come through because I think he’s outstanding,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“On the left, you’ve got [Marcus] Rashford and [Anthony] Martial and then you’ve got [Paul] Pogba potentially can fit in there if he’s not in midfield.

“If you sign [Harry] Kane or [Erling] Haaland as well, I don’t think that works for Manchester United in the way they’ve recruited in the past few years. I think it’s Sancho and I think that’s their business done.”
