Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given an update on Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane as Manchester United prepare to get their Premier League season underway this weekend. The Red Devils host Leeds United on Saturday in a lunchtime kick off.

United announced the signing of Sancho earlier this summer as Solskjaer looks to build a squad which is capable of battling for Premier League honours.

The forward made the move to Old Trafford following four years with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho impressed during his time in Germany and struck an impressive 50 goals in 137 appearances for the club.

The 21-year-old has gone on to win 22 caps for England and was part of Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad this summer.

Despite announcing Sancho’s arrival in July, United only welcomed the player to the club this week as he linked up with his new team-mates for the first time.

Sancho didn’t appear in any of the team’s pre-season friendlies and Solskjaer is unsure whether the forward will be ready to start this weekend.

“Jadon has come in and done very good this week,” Solskjaer said ahead of the game.

“Maybe [the game against Leeds has arrived] a little bit too early – I’ll see how he is. I’d say you’ll see him. He’s definitely involved in the squad.”

Solskjaer will be keen to get his new signing involved as soon as possible after splashing out £73million to land the superstar this summer.

United have an embarrassment of riches in their attacking department following the capture of Sancho – with Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial all set to start against Leeds.

Meanwhile, United have confirmed that Varane will not be available for the opening clash either as his transfer from Real Madrid has not yet been officially completed.

United looked set to conclude the deal weeks ago but the transfer was held up due to Varane’s visa issues and a period in quarantine following his arrival in England.

Solskjaer is therefore likely to turn to Victor Lindelof to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of United’s defence, with Eric Bailly only just returning to Old Trafford after playing for the Ivory Coast at the Olympic Games in Japan.

The Norwegian boss will be hoping to get the all-clear to name Varane in his starting line up sooner rather than later as United go in search of their first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

United have won a record 13 Premier League titles but spent years in the doldrums following Ferguson’s departure.

The Red Devils have improved significantly under Solskjaer but the manager is yet to win a trophy during his time in charge and will be looking to change that this season.
