Man Utd and Chelsea on alert as Robert Lewandoski’s future becomes unclear

Manchester United and Chelsea have been put on alert as Robert Lewandowski’s future has been made unclear, according to reports. The Bayern Munich striker is believed to be considering a new challenge this summer after winning a seventh-straight Bundesliga title.

Lewandowski has scored an incredible 47 times in all competitions this season, including 18 in his last 11 matches.

His goals have been a key factor in Bayern winning a ninth-consecutive Bundesliga title. Hans-Dieter Flick’s side holds an 11-point lead over RB Leipzig at the top of the table with three matches remaining.

The Poland international scored a penalty in Saturday’s surprise 2-2 draw against SC Freiburg.

That goal lifted Lewandowski’s league tally to 40 for the campaign, 13 ahead of second-placed Andre Silva of Eintracht Frankfurt and 15 above Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

However, despite his success in front of goal, Lewandowski was unable to help Bayern retain their Champions League title.

They were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain on away goals following a 3-3 aggregate scoreline. The French side sought revenge for last year’s final, which Bayern won 1-0, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side was then knocked out by Manchester City in the semi-final.

And it has been reported that Lewandowski will seek a new challenge this summer having won every possible trophy at the Allianz Arena.

Meanwhile, United could also be looking for a new striker this summer, despite extending Edinson Cavani’s deal by a further year.

It is believed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants a long-term number nine to lead his attack, although Cavani’s new deal could mean that they enter the market next summer. A £64.5m clause in Norwegian forward Haaland’s Dortmund contract becomes active in 2022.

Bayern have been keen to play down reports that Lewandowski will leave.

“He will definitely stay,” chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said recently when asked about Lewandowski’s future. “Who sells a player who scored 60 goals every year?”

Reaching 40 league goals for the season also tied Lewandowski with the legendary German striker Gerd Muller’s record.

This is a huge honour. For me, but also for the modern history of the Bundesliga,” Lewandowski said on Saturday after securing the title. “It was a legendary record that stood for a long time. What Gerd Muller achieved was unbelievable. I would never have thought I could have shared a record with him.”
