Man Utd And Chelsea Both Expected To Table Bids For £52.7M Rated South American Within ‘Weeks’ – Report

BACK Man Utd and Chelsea are vying for the signature of Gremio centre-back Luis Eduardo, according to reports in the Spanish media. The Brazilian caught the eye with his performances at the Under-17 World Cup, and Madrid-based publication AS claims that the two Premier League clubs have made contact with his entourage. They predict that both teams could table formal offers for Eduardo within “weeks”, which suggests that there will be a battle for his signature during the January transfer window. The teenager turns 18 on the 16th next month, which is the date he will be eligible for a move abroad. Gremio won’t sanction his sale on the cheap Eduardo’s contract has a release clause worth €60m (£52.7m), and while it is unlikely that any club will be prepared to pay that much for the 17-year-old, it does make a deal harder to negotiate. Gremio have protected the value of the defender, so it will be up to either United or Chelsea to make them a proposal which is too hard to turn down. What do Man Utd fans need to know about Eduardo? The centre-half came up through the ranks of Gremio and he impressed with his performances in the Copinha (Brazil’s Under 20 tournament) at the start of this year. Eduardo made his senior debut against Ypiranga-RS in the Gaucho State Championship in February, before going on to play for Brazil in the South American Under-17 Championships a couple of months later. He was then named in the squad for the Under-17 World Cup, where he played a prominent role as Brazil reached the semi-final stage. He started every match until a suspension forced him to miss the defeat on penalties to eventual tournament winners Portugal in the last four.
