Man United could take a huge financial hit if they choose to sanction a Harry Maguire sale.
Manchester United Football Club are evolving under Erik ten Hag. Although the dressing room is similar to how it was when the Dutchman took charge, there’s been an obvious switch in footballers who start matches.
Take Harry Maguire for example. The club captain was consistently the first name on the team sheet under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, though the Englishman has largely been a squad player this term.
Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have taken complete control of the starting job, with Maguire often out in the cold. Questions about his future at Old Trafford are now swirling.
The latest update in the saga comes from the Daily Mail, who say that United ‘will be faced’ with taking a £40m transfer hit if the 29-year-old is sold this summer.
Maguire started away at Leeds over the weekend, with Ten Hag resting his regular starters for the Barca game this coming Thursday. However, you get the impression that playing a bit-part role is simply not enough for United’s number five.
The centre-back is under contract until 2025, currently collecting £180,000-a-week in terms of wages. There’s only a handful of clubs out there who’ll be able to match that salary.
I just struggle to see how United find someone to spend £40m on Maguire, given his struggles here in Manchester. The club that eventually ends up signing the centre-back will be buying the name, rather than an elite-level defender.
Honestly, a move abroad to somewhere like Italy feels perfect. Get Maguire in a back five, a system in which he excels, away from the English press, and I genuinely think it’d be like starting afresh for the defender.
