Man United ‘weighing up a move’ to sign 23-year-old goalkeeper, face stiff competition: report

Man United are said to be considering making a move to sign Columbus Crew goalkeeper, Patrick Schulte.

Last summer, Manchester United completely overhauled their goalkeepers. The Red Devils signed Andre Onana as their new number one, while also bringing in Altay Bayindir as back-up.

After a slow start, Onana has grown into the role, starting to look like a top tier goalie who can help this side progress forward. Altay, on the other hand, has only been handed one start.

If you believe reports, the Turk is frustrated at a lack of chances and as a result, is already thinking about leaving Manchester United.

It’s no surprise then, to read that United are now looking at other potential goalkeeper signings, including Columbus Crew’s Patrick Schulte.

The Daily Mail provide the information, as they claim that United are ‘weighing up a move’ to sign the 23-year-old shot-stopper, with stiff competition provided by Arsenal.

Schulte has emerged as an option for several Premier League sides after an excellent year for Columbus Crew, helping his side lift the MLS Cup.

It’s believed that Schulte has been ‘scouted extensively’ by Premier League teams, including United and Arsenal. Liverpool, Chelsea and City could also see some changes made in the goalkeeping position this summer, so could also be keen.

United have always scouted goalkeepers very well. You look at the impact of David de Gea over the last decade. Dean Henderson was once talked up as having a massive future within the game, while Sergio Romero was probably the best back-up in the business during his time in Manchester. I have no doubts that Schulte is an incredibly talented young keeper and if United view him as the ideal replacement for Bayindir, then they should push hard to get the deal done.

The problem? United is no longer the top destination it once was. Pretty much every other side linked with Schulte is in a better position, footballing-wise, than the Reds are right now.

Do you think a Man United move to sign Patrick Schulte would make sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
