Man United have set their sights on Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
It goes without saying, a move for a new defensive midfielder is probably atop Manchester United’s wishlist at this point. Many holes were filled in the summer window just gone, though that midfield void still remains.
Personally, I always assumed we’d eventually end up signing Declan Rice from West Ham United. However, over the last few days, all the stories seem to be pouring cold water on that one.
The latest claim comes from the Daily Star, who also state that United have ended their interest in Rice.
Instead, the Reds ‘want to sign’ the classy 25-year-old Premier League star Kalvin Phillips. Yeah, the Leeds United player…
I guess we’re all thinking it. Why a Leeds player? Well, take rivalry aside and we all know this lad can play.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is prioritising making a signing in this key position next summer, with United prepared to look elsewhere from Rice and moving towards his England teammate Phillips.
Apparently, Jude Bellingham is another target though the report from the Daily Star claims Liverpool actually lead that race…
Phillips is under contract until 2024, though his asking price is much lower than that of Rice’s. As of now, he’s valued at around £60m by Leeds. Though they’re a club who aren’t under any real pressure to sell – unless they face relegation this season.
I like Phillips and I think he’d be an upgrade. However, I’m just not convinced this deal happens. Leeds would rather sell to anyone but us and they’ll be a whole host of clubs after a player like Phillips. Plus this lad is Leeds through and through. I can’t see him willingly moving to Old Trafford.
