Jarrad Branthwaite will not push for a Man United transfer this summer, amid reported interest.

Manchester United have been linked with signing a centre-back heavily this summer. It’s perhaps the biggest area of need, particularly after Raphael Varane’s somewhat surprising exit.

The name most linked with fulfilling the open centre-back starting role is Jarrad Branthwaite. The Englishman comes with a hefty price tag, thought to be around the £70m mark. That figure could urge the Red Devils into looking at other options instead.

Over the last 24 hours, Football Transfers have provided an update in regard to United’s possible move to sign Branthwaite, and it comes from the side of the player.

They state that the United transfer target will not ‘force through’ a move to the Reds, despite already verbally agreeing terms with the Old Trafford club.

The defender has apparently been in talks with United since the beginning of the year, remaining hopeful of sealing a move to the Theatre of Dreams.

However, Branthwaite will not cause any disruption to Everton, a club he greatly respects.

Football Transfers believe around £65m could get a deal done, though that offer is far larger than the initial £43m bid, including add-ons, made by United. That figure was instantly rejected by Everton.

This could be United playing the waiting game, in the hope that Everton cave and sell for lower as they look to comply with Premier League spending rules. However, Everton may genuinely have no interest in selling Branthwaite for any less. At the end of the day, the ball is firmly in the park of the selling club.

For what it’s worth, I do not believe a deal will be reached to sign Branthwaite. Hence, United are now pushing hard to bring in Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich.
