Man United are working hard to try and sign Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich this summer.

Manchester United have made no secret of the fact that they’re trying to sign a new centre-half this summer. The Old Trafford club have lost Raphael Varane and his minutes need replacing.

Jarrad Branthwaite felt like the top target initially, though a move to sign the Englishman appears to be off the table right now, due to Everton’s asking price. The Goodison Park club are under no pressure to sell.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have now seemingly moved onto alternative targets, with Matthijs de Ligt feeling like the new frontrunner. Now, the Daily Mail have provided an update on the future of the Dutch centre-half.

They state that United talks to sign the Bayern Munich player are ‘progressing’, with the Reds in discussions over a £42m move to sign De Ligt – plus add-ons and bonuses.

De Ligt will be allowed to leave Bavaria if the right offer comes in, as Bayern will welcome centre-back Jonathan Tah to the Allianz Arena this summer.

Ten Hag likes to surround himself with familiarity and he will know De Ligt well due to the Dutch connection. Both also have a history at Ajax.

It feels like De Ligt has been around for ages, having broken into the Ajax first-team as a very young teenager. He’s still only 24 years old, bringing experience aplenty to the table.

My only concern here is that he has a dodgy injury record, particularly surrounding his knee. If United are confident that he’s over the worst of that, then this has the potential to be an excellent piece of business. It does feel like a gamble, though.

Do you think a Man United move to sign Matthijs de Ligt would make sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
