Man United submit offer to sign mega-talented 19-year-old, Reds pushing ahead to acquire classy midfielder: report

Man United have made an offer to sign mega-talented midfielder, Joao Neves.

Manchester United need extra bodies through the door this summer, in pretty much every area of the field. The squad is light in depth in some key positions and that has to be addressed by INEOS.

Among the names linked somewhat heavily with an Old Trafford switch in the past is Joao Neves. The youngster has enjoyed another excellent season over in Portugal with SL Benfica – and perhaps it’s now time to make that move to the big leagues.

It’s Sport‘s Tuesday print edition with the claim, as Sport Witness relay the information. They state that United have actually submitted an offer to sign the mega-talented 19-year-old.

Hold your horses, though, as that £51m bid has been instantly rejected by Benfica. Perhaps this was just an introductory offer by the Red Devils, in order to test the waters.

Neves is protected by a huge release clause worth just over £100m, which is probably why the move was instantly shut down by the Portuguese side.

On a positive side, the Reds are now seemingly pushing ahead with any move to acquire the classy midfielder, though it’s going to cost them a pretty penny.

There seems to be a general acceptance that Benfica would be willing to lower that fee, though you’d still assume it’d cost at least £80m to prise the midfielder away from Portugal this summer. Do United have that sort of cash to spend on one player? I’m not convinced.

If, somehow, the club can raise that sort of money, then this would be a truly unreal piece of business.

Do you think a Man United move to sign Joao Neves would make sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
