Man United starlet refused chance to play at major tournament this summer as Reds won’t let him leave: report

Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho will not play in the Olympic Games this summer.

Manchester United endured a pretty brutal 2023/24 season, though to the player’s credit, they ended it with a bang, lifting the FA Cup trophy. Without doubt, Erik ten Hag deserves credit for the unlikely accomplishment, after placing his trust in young players.

Alejandro Garnacho scored the opener after a Manchester City mix-up, capping off a pretty remarkable season for the young Argentine winger. He’s truly beginning to come of age right before our eyes.

The attacker is now among the first names on the team sheet at club level, while he’s also now a regular for his country, too. Argentina play some friendlies in the coming weeks, which Garnacho is expected to be involved in. However, he will not be selected for the Argentina Olympic side as United have said no…

It’s Gaston Edul with the scoop. The journalist took to Twitter to share his latest information on the news. Apparently, the United starlet has been refused the chance to play at the major tournament by his club, who will not let Garnacho leave for the tournament. At first, this just seems like a brutal decision for the young man, though the more you think about it, the more it makes sense.

First and foremost, Garnacho needs a rest. He started 30+ consecutive games for the Red Devils at one point this season, with that streak ending during the final Premier League game of the campaign. It was a term where United were heavily dependent on a young player. The club do not want to see one of their starlets suffering from burnout.

Secondly, it’s a massive disruption. The Olympics starts when United will be in the middle of their pre-season tour. If Argentina were to make it to the final, there’s also a chance Garnacho would miss several club games as a result. Obviously, that’s less than ideal.

Although it’s tough on the player, he’ll likely understand why this decision has been made.
