Donny van de Beek is all set to head back to Man United this summer, after failing to impress at Eintracht Frankfurt.

When senior players leave Manchester United, they rarely go on to enjoy success elsewhere. I genuinely cannot remember the last footballer to depart from Old Trafford and go on to have meaningful triumphs.

Erik ten Hag has been trying to shift on plenty of fringe players ever since he took charge at the Theatre of Dreams – though it’s proving difficult due to their overinflated wages. One player who undoubtedly falls into that bracket is Donny van de Beek.

The Dutch midfielder has never really looked good enough for Manchester United, ever since signing for the club in a £30m+ deal from Ajax. Even Ten Hag, who he worked with over in Amsterdam, couldn’t get a tune out of him.

Eintracht Frankfurt took a gamble on Van de Beek, bringing him in on loan in January for the remainder of the season with an option to buy.

However, according to The Mirror, the United star is ‘expected to return’ to the Reds after failing to impress during the loan.

Van de Beek has been in and out of the starting line-up, while also being an unused substitute on three occasions already. It’s clear he’s not a regular right now, though he still has a few months to try and turn things around.

The German club did negotiate an option to buy Van de Beek for around £12.5m plus add-ons, though as things stand, they have ‘no intention’ of activating that option.

It’s just another case of United overpaying for a player, then struggling to move on from them. The only positive here for United is the fact that Van de Beek’s deal runs out in 2025, so at the very most, he’ll be here for another season.

In all likelihood, I can see Van de Beek heading out on loan again next term, as I do not see any club willing to pay any sort of decent transfer fee to sign the Dutchman this time around. Simply put, he hasn’t shown anywhere near enough.
