Man United Slammed For Not Recruiting Midfield Enforcer Who Arsenal Snapped Up For Only £10M

BACK

Former Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has questioned why Man United did not choose to pursue Christian Norgaard.

The Brentford captain joined Arsenal for an initial £10m last month, but speaking to Sky Bet (quotes via The Metro), Nicholas said the Danish international would have been a great fit for the Red Devils:

“There are a lot of players out there, a whole list who I think would be better than what Manchester United currently have,”

“I just don’t know where they see themselves going. If I was Manchester United, why didn’t they go in for Christian Norgaard?”

“It looks as if they’ve waited for two high-profile players, but I look at them and I think, why are not adding more players like Norgaard, or players who have played well at Bournemouth and Newcastle – you could disrupt things and see who’s interested.”

Norgaard’s age made him an unlikely target

While the Dane has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers over the past few years, it must be pointed out that he is already 31 years of age.

United have often been accused of signing players at the back end of their careers who have no sell-on value, and the club’s recruitment team have tried to stay clear of such signings. For that reason, it is understandable why Norgaard was overlooked.

Man United are hoping to recruit a midfielder this month

Despite deciding against signing Norgaard, head coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly hoping for reinforcements in the centre of the pitch before the transfer window shuts.

The Manchester club have been linked with traditional no.6s like Joao Palhinha and Wilfred Ndidi, but it is thought that they are seeking a more dynamic player. We shall see who comes onto the radar in the coming days.
