Man United set to make ‘formal offer’ to sign midfielder after player made breakthrough season: report

Man United are ready to make their first move in an effort to sign Sunderland’s Chris Rigg.

Manchester United have always excelled when it comes to signing younger players and developing their talents, rather than spending big money on marquee signings who come in with massive pressure immediately on their shoulders.

It would make sense for the Old Trafford side to go back to basics under INEOS, and start from the ground upwards. With money tight this summer, the Reds may be forced into scouring the market for the next generation anyway.

According to the Northern Echo, one young player on the radar is Chris Rigg. The 16-year-old currently plies his trade for Sunderland, with the young man enjoying a breakthrough season in the Championship, playing over twenty matches.

The Northern Echo state that United are ‘set to fire the starting gun’ in an effort to sign Rigg, with the Reds believed to be ready to make a ‘formal offer’ to bring in the midfielder.

The Black Cats are understandably keen to keep Rigg on Wearside, as they look to try to persuade the player to commit his future to the club, by signing his first pro contract.

FA rules state that Rigg is unable to sign pro terms until his seventeenth birthday, which falls on June 18th. At that point, his future may well become clearer.

Obviously, midfield is an area where United still need work. The club are likely to lose both Christian Eriksen and Sofyan Amrabat this summer, too, so bodies are needed. Rigg is super young so if signed, I’d be surprised if he slots right into the United senior dressing room from day one. Rather, this feels like a potential signing with the long-term future in mind.
