Man United set to get massive injury lift, key player set to return to squad for Newcastle United game

Lisandro Martinez is looking set to make his return to Man United action against Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Manchester United’s squad has been decimated by injury this season. The Red Devils have been dealing without major players for prolonged periods of time, making Erik ten Hag’s job that much more difficult.

We’re now approaching the business end of the season, with just a few games remaining. Thankfully, it does seem as if the Reds will be getting a few players back just in time for the FA Cup final. Whether they’ll have the match sharpness for the Wembley showpiece is another question entirely…

Ten Hag spoke to the media today and was asked whether anyone would be fit to return for the Newcastle game at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening. To my surprise, he’d confirm a massive injury lift for United, with one key player set to return to the squad; Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentine has been in training with the first-team and the Dutch manager has confirmed that he is planning for the centre-half to be available.

Check out what Ten Hag had to say in full here:

“Very good question. Licha Martinez, I think he will return in the squad. He has now [had] some sessions with us and we plan for him to be available.” Ten Hag told ManUtd.com.

“This afternoon, [if] everything goes right in the training, he will return in the squad. For some other players, we have to see. Rashford, Bruno, Willy Kambwala, if they are fit enough.”

Obviously, we’d all be mightily surprised if Licha starts this game, though the fact that he’s set to be in the squad is a nice bonus. It’s the start of his journey back to fitness.

In an ideal world, United can give Martinez 20 minutes at the end of the game, with the view of giving him a similar amount of minutes against Brighton this coming weekend. He’d then have a slim chance at starting in the FA Cup final the following weekend.

What this does mean for definite is that Martinez should be good to play a full part in pre-season tour, meaning he should be 100% for the 2024/25 campaign, assuming he suffers no injury setbacks.
