Man United make 21-year-old centre-back their ‘top defensive target’ this summer as Reds look to bolster options: report

Man United have Jarrad Branthwaite as their number one defensive option in the transfer window.

Manchester United need to acquire at least one centre-half of real quality this summer. In an ideal world, INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe will bring in two central defenders.

Raphael Varane has left. Jonny Evans may follow. Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire both have uncertain futures. It’s probably the area where the Reds need the most help going into this vital summer window.

There can be no doubt that the name most linked with filling that void is Jarrad Branthwaite. The man from Everton had an excellent 2023/24 campaign for Everton and he’s now pushing hard for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s finalised European Championship squad.

Over the last 24 hours Football Insider have provided another update on that front. Once again, it’s reiterated that Branthwaite is a major consideration for the Old Trafford club.

According to the report, United have made the 21-year-old centre-back their ‘top defensive target’ this summer, as the Reds look to bolster their options.

Also under consideration are both Gleison Bremer and Jean-Clair Todibo, though it’s clear that Branthwaite is the frontrunner.

United will not have it all their own way in their pursuit of Branthwaite, who has drawn the attention of ‘multiple top clubs’ after some stellar performances.

The Red Devils are still ‘monitoring’ Branthwaite’s situation at Goodison Park, as Everton may well need to sell a key player or two in order to remain in line with Premier League Profit and Sustainability rules.

We’ve said it time and time again, but this would be an unreal piece of business if the Old Trafford side could somehow pull it off. Branthwaite is an elite player who could offer genuine longevity in a position of desperate need. Yes, it’d take a large chunk of the summer transfer budget, but he’d 100% be worth it.

Do you think a Man United move to sign Jarrad Branthwaite would make sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
