Man United identify 21 y/o defender as one of ‘main targets’ this summer, currently £20m apart in valuation of player: report

Man United are keen on bringing in Jarrad Branthwaite, though they will not overpay.

Unless Manchester United are prepared to place huge trust in Willy Kambwala, the Red Devils simply have no choice but to sign a new centre-half this summer. Raphael Varane is leaving. His minutes need to be replaced with genuine quality. The FA Cup final was a prime example of that.

With money tight, you’d assume that a large chunk of the transfer budget will go on this position. There can be no doubt that the name most-linked with filling the Varane-shaped hole is Jarrad Branthwaite.

The England international enjoyed himself for Everton this season, as his stock continued to rise over the course of an excellent campaign. It has led to a selection in the provisional Euro 2024 squad for the Three Lions.

Now, the Daily Star have provided an update on Branthwaite’s future, amid those United rumours. They state that United have identified the 21-year-old defender as one of their ‘main targets’ this summer.

However, United will ‘not be held to ransom’ for Branthwaite’s signature. Everton are demanding around £80m to let the Englishman leave, though United value the player at somewhere around £60m. That’s a £20m difference at this point in time.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to stop United from grossly overpaying for players, which does make sense given some of the horrific transfer dealings the Reds have made of late.

There can be no doubt that Branthwaite would be a stellar signing. He’s someone who could offer longevity in a real position of need for the Red Devils, though that does come at a price. In all honesty, I believe Branthwaite would be worth it. He’d be a day one starter for the Old Trafford club, hopefully forming a bond with Lisandro Martinez at the heart of defence.
