Man United are making moves to bring in Joao Neves this summer, per Portuguese reports.

Manchester United Football Club could look to add some extra quality to their midfield this summer, with the Red Devils quietly struggling for depth in that area of the field.

Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are getting older. Who knows if Mason Mount can stay fit? Scott McTominay is still deemed surplus to requirements.

There can be no doubt that the most glamorous transfer option in that area of the field is Joao Neves. The Portugal impressed for Benfica last term, seeing his transfer asking price rise as a result.

Now, O Jogo, per Sport Witness, have provided the latest on the midfielder’s situation. They claim that Manchester United could now face competition from Manchester City for the teenager.

However, the Old Trafford side remain in the driver’s seat right now, having taken ‘concrete steps’ to secure the signature of the 19-year-old midfielder.

United are said to have made an offer of around £60m for Neves, which was matched by PSG. Both offers were turned down.

Benfica themselves want around £85m to let their prized asset leave. This sort of figure could be unrealistic for the Old Trafford club, who are already strapped for cash due to Premier League Profit & Sustainability rules.

The verdict

This one feels like a long shot. I do not envisage United sacrificing pretty much their whole summer budget on one player, although it would be remarkable to watch a midfield duo of Kobbie Mainoo and Joao Neves.

The lack of Champions League football on the table also means United would have to tempt Neves in with a mega-money contract. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have made no secret of the fact that they will not overpay for players – in terms of both transfer fee and weekly wage.
