Man United are said to have begun talks with Kobbie Mainoo, over a new contract for the young man.

Manchester United have never shied away from giving younger players their opportunity at the highest level. It’s a foundation that this club has been built upon.

Erik ten Hag has continued that mantra, with Alejandro Garnacho and more recently, Kobbie Mainoo. The pair were part of an FA Youth Cup winning squad that is jam-packed with talent.

This has been Mainoo’s breakthrough campaign. Ever since returning from injury, he has been a mainstay in that midfield, with the young man probably the most consistent performer at the club since that point.

Now, as a result, the Manchester Evening News write that United have ‘opened talks’ with the emerging star over a new contract.

Mainoo only signed a new contract in February 2023, though talks have taken place, with the club looking to reward Mainoo due to his importance in the squad.

It’s stressed by the MEN that all parties are relaxed about the situation, with Mainoo focussing on his individual performances for the remainder of the season. That said, there will be a wage increase coming the teenager’s way if the contract is signed.

Stockport-born Mainoo isn’t likely to put pen on paper until the summer at the very earliest, with the player keeping his feet firmly on the ground at this young stage of his career.

Mainoo has been United’s best player over the last few months. He brings a calmness and composure to a midfield that was seriously struggling before his emergence. I have no qualms with that form being rewarded. He seems like someone who is fully capable of staying grounded despite a rapid rise to stardom, which is always a big plus when youngsters are thrust into the limelight.

Do you think Kobbie Mainoo deserves a new deal already? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
