Man United will initiate negotiations with Frenkie de Jong in February. The Red Devils are set to face Barcelona in the UEFA Europa League next year. And they reckon they can establish contact with the Netherlands international. The 25-year-old midfielder stays at a crossroads in his career despite performing consistently for the Blaugrana. The Dutch midfielder was on the transfer list in the summer but stayed defiant in his stance to stay at Spotify Camp Nou. So the Blaugrana failed to offload him despite trying to balance the books with his sale. The Dutch midfielder started the 2022/23 campaign as a backup option but has forced his way into Xavi’s plans. The former Ajax midfielder has chipped in with two goals and one assist in 17 games thus far. And de Jong is coming off a solid 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign. So it is hardly surprising that Frenkie has emerged on the radar of Man United again. The Red Devils had been desperate to sign Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window, as Erik ten Hag wanted to reunite with the Barcelona midfielder. But de Jong had no interest in joining Man United as they were playing in the UEFA Europa League. So Man United had to identify alternatives and bolstered the midfield unit by signing Casemiro and Eriksen. With de Jong opening up to join the Red Devils, a move might be on the cards.
