Mason Greenwood is set to be rewarded for his dazzling early-season form with a recall to the England squad.

That’s according to a report in The Times as Gareth Southgate prepares to name his first 23-man group since England’s heart-breaking Euro 2020 final defeat.

Manchester United striker Greenwood, 19, has only been capped once by his country and missed out on a place in the summer tournament through injury.

In his absence, the Three Lions ended as runners-up following penalty shoot-out by Italy beneath the famous Wembley arch after reaching their first international showpiece in 55 years.

Greenwood could only watch on as United teammates Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho – a £72.9million signing from Borussia Dortmund this summer window – along with Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka missed from the spot in the cruellest circumstances.

As attentions revert back to the ongoing World Cup qualifying campaign, though, the United starlet is among the players to have forced his way into England contention, once again.

Southgate’s men are due to take on Hungary, Andorra and Poland next month.

As per that same report in The Times, Greenwood will be joined by returning Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and, meanwhile, a whole host of England regulars from Old Trafford – such as Sancho and United captain Harry Maguire.

Should that news be confirmed in the coming days, it will mark Greenwood’s first appearance in an England squad since he was sent home from Iceland last year.

Along with Manchester City playmaker Phil Foden, who remains on the side-lines with injury, the United man was removed from the group after breaking strict Covid-19 protocols.

Having served his punishment for that misdemeanour, Greenwood has started the Premier League season in flying form with two goals in as many games.
