Man United are said to be at the front of the queue to sign Ivan Toney.
Manchester United have had their issues in the striker department of late. The Red Devils didn’t really have any output from that position – until Rasmus Hojlund starting scoring.
The Dane is now hitting his stride after a settling in period. It’s superb to see the ex-Atalanta man looking so sharp. However, he does need help. With Anthony Martial out injured and the Frenchman likely to leave this summer, a new striker signing feels like an absolute certainty.
According to TeamTalk, Ivan Toney could be that man. The Englishman has recently returned following a suspension, scoring for Brentford during his first match back, reminding us all just how prolific he can be.
What’s interesting is that the article believes United are favourites to sign the 27-year-old striker, though they will face heavy competition from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea to bring in Toney.
Brentford could be resigned to losing Toney this coming summer, with the striker holding aspirations of playing for a team who are competing at the business end of the Premier League table.
There can be no doubt that Toney would be an unreal signing for whatever side does win his signature – though I’m not sure this is the sort of move that the Reds should be making at this point in time.
First of all, Toney would expect starts every single week. That’d hamper the development of Hojlund, who is now looking like a top tier player within his own right.
Secondly, it’d be a large chunk of the budget dropped on one player, in a position where United probably need to bring in a cheaper option, rather than splashing massive cash.
That’s not to say Toney is a bad player. Far from it. I just don’t believe it’s the right fit.
