Man City vs RB Leipzig live stream: How to watch Champions League fixture online and on TV tonight

Guardiola: Manchester City still have ‘drive’ to win UCL for first time

Manchester City welcome RB Leipzig to the Etihad Stadium this evening as the hosts look to kick off their 2021/22 Champions League campaign on a positive note, following the heartbreak of last season’s defeat by Chelsea in the final.

Leipzig, meanwhile, reached the round of 16 last term, exiting with a comprehensive loss to Liverpool over two legs. The German club, founded in 2009, are still pursuing their first trophy, having come agonisingly close last season with runners-up finishes in the Bundesliga and in the Pokal. Two years ago, Julian Nagelsmann led Leipzig to the semi-finals of the Champions League – their best effort in the competition so far – but former RB Salzburg coach Jesse Marsch is in charge for the new campaign.

City enter tonight’s fixture in fine form, having scored 11 goals and conceded none en route to three wins in their last three games. Leipzig, meanwhile, have not exactly started the season impressively, with three defeats and one victory in the Bundesliga so far. They will have to improve their performances in order to successfully navigate a difficult Group A in the Champions League, a pool rounded out by Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge.

HALF TIME: Manchester City 3-1 RB Leipzig

It’s been a good half from City. I’m pretty sure they’ve played much better this season without hitting the target, but they’ve scored three times here thanks to a set-piece, an own goal and a late penalty – and you can have no complaints about that.

Leipzig had hardly played until they were 2-0 down but pulled one back through Nkunku, only for City to go down the other end and win a fortunate-looking penalty on the stroke of half time.

Mahrez did the rest and it’s put City in a commanding position at the break.

GOAL! Manchester City 3-1 RB Leipzig (MAHREZ 45’)

Perfect penalty from Mahrez, smashed into the top right corner to re-establish City’s two-goal lead.

PENALTY TO CITY! Manchester City 2-1 RB Leipzig

It’s been awarded! Torres met Cancelo’s cross and directed his header towards goal. His effort was blocked by Klostermann’s arm, after the defender had turned his back. It looks harsh but his arm was raised…

Manchester City 2-1 RB Leipzig

44 mins: City are appealing for a penalty after the ball appears to strike Klostermann on the arm – and the referee will now check the VAR monitor!

GOAL! Manchester City 2-1 RB Leipzig (Nkunku 41’)

It had been coming! Leipzig hit back shortly before the break as Nkunku’s header beats Ederson.

The move started with Forsberg cross to the back post, which Mukiele nodded back towards Nkunku, who finished into the far corner.

Leipzig had had a couple of moments before they scored, and City had become a little flat.

Manchester City 2-0 RB Leipzig

38 mins: Leipzig work the ball well against the City press before releasing Angelino out on the left. The full-back’s cross is dangerous but Ake was positioned well to clear the ball over his bar for a corner.

Ake then wins the header from the set-piece before Olmo’s shot is deflected wide for another – City are then eventually able to clear for a throw.

Manchester City 2-0 RB Leipzig

34 mins: RB Leipzig have the ball in the net but it’s been ruled out for offside! Silva was slipped through on goal and managed to finish past Ederson at the second attempt, but he was a foot or two offside. Good defensive line from City.

At the other end, Grealish cuts inside Mukiele and unleashes a low shot which is gathered by Gulacsi.

Manchester City 2-0 RB Leipzig

31 mins: Pep Guardiola won’t be entirely happy with his side’s performance so far but he’ll be very satisfied by the scoreline. Two fantastic deliveries from Grealish and De Bruyne have made the difference.

Here’s the moment that Mukiele will want to forget.

GOAL! Manchester City 2-0 RB Leipzig (Mukiele OG 27’)

It’s quite brilliant from De Bruyne. From the right, he delivers another dangerous ball across the face of goal. Mukiele gets into a terrible position, with Grealish lurking behind him, and he gets his attempted header back towards Gulacsi horribly wrong. Instead of finding the goalkeeper it bobbles over the line and doubles City’s lead.

Manchester City 1-0 RB Leipzig

25 mins: Close! De Bruyne delivers a wonderful cross towards the back post and Ake is inches away from making contact on it as he comes sliding in.
